ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington men's tennis team earned their first Sun Belt Conference win on Sunday, defeating Georgia Southern 4-1 at the UTA Tennis Center to wrap up their home portion of the schedule. The Mavericks are now 12-9 overall and 1-3 in the SBC.
The Eagles went up early in the match after winning the doubles point.
Daichi Akiyoshi and
Solano Caffarena lost 6-3 on Court 2 before
Ricardo Alban and
Alan Sau Franco followed with a loss by the same score on Court 3.
The Mavericks were quick to battle back in the singles matches after the doubles loss.
Miguel Cabrera was the only player to win in straight sets, finishing first 6-4, 6-4 at line two to even the match.
Maks Lukman earned the next victory with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 win at line four to give the Mavericks the lead.
Alan Sau Franco brought in the next win at line one, coming back after losing the first set to win 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
With the Mavericks up 3-1, it came down to
Anton Shepp,
Solano Caffarena, and
Daichi Akiyoshi at lines three, five, and six to clinch the match.
Akiyoshi secured the match for UTA 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 on Court 6 in a tough three set battle, giving the Mavericks a 4-1 win.
UP NEXT
The Mavericks will wrap up SBC play next weekend in Alabama where they will take on Troy (April 2) and South Alabama (April 3).
