Mavs Begin Sun Belt Play With Win Over Texas State

SAN MARCOS – The UT Arlington women's tennis team overcame a doubles point loss to defeat in-state rival Texas State on Wednesday afternoon, 4-2, in San Marcos. The Mavericks move to 12-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Bobcats jumped out early in the match, taking a 1-0 advantage in a battle-tested doubles contention. Carla Pons and Bruna Casasampere fell 6-3 on court three to put Texas State one match away from clinching.

Lines one and two both stood at 6-6, with either team able to put their team ahead.  Mae McCutcheon and Jadeh Chan took it upon themselves to end the doubles matches, winning the tiebreaker 8-6 over the Liz Chileno and Ana Paula Jimenez to clinch the doubles points for Texas State.

The Mavericks responded in singles play as Sarina Reinertsen swept her opponent on line five 6-0, 6-0 to remain undefeated on the season.

The Bobcats would bounce back with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Momoka Horiguchi on court one, but that would be the last point of the day for Texas State.

Ana Paula Jimenez evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six before Tara Gorinsek defeated Sofia Fortuno 6-1, 7-5 on court four to put UTA one point away from a team victory.

Liz Chileno hunkered down and clinched the match for the Mavericks in straight sets, but not without a fight, winning 7-5, 6-4 on court two as the Mavericks won 4-2.
