ATLANTA – After a valiant effort, the UT Arlington softball team dropped its final game of the series Sunday against the Panthers in a 7-8 loss in extras.
UTA battled the entire way through against Georgia State as it ended in the Panther's favor. The Mavs now sit on an overall record of 16-17 and a conference record of 7-8.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at Georgia State (L, 7-8)
UTA's
Morgan Rios finished 2-3 on the day as the catcher knocked her second 3-run homerun of the series. The graduate student tabbed a total of eight RBI on the weekend – most of the Maverick's offense.
Alongside Rios is senior
Meagan Smith who also recorded two home runs herself as she connected with her second long ball of the series in Sunday's contest. Smith leads UTA with eight home runs on the season so far.
Freshman
Haley Mountain started in her seventh game this season as she had a day at the pate going 2-4 with two RBI.
Jadyn Erickson and
Sophie Wideman contributed to the Mavs' seven hits as the pair had one hit apiece.
Jessica Adams got the start in the circle – her second start of the Georgia State series – as the freshman went on to throw 7.0 innings allowing seven earned runs off 14 hits.
Sophomore
Gracie Bumpurs came in for Adams in the bottom of the eighth where she faced just one batter as the Panthers walked it off with a single down the left field line.
Adams received her 11th loss of the season as she sits on an overall record of 10-11.
PLAY BY PLAY: at Georgia State (L, 7-8)
- Georgia State jumped to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bats as Bailee Richardson knocked an RBI-single.
- In the bottom of the second, the Panthers extended their led to 3-0 after two RBI-singles from Carolyn Deady and Gabby Benson.
- UTA struck back in the top of the fourth after Langston tabbed a sacrifice fly and an RBI-triple from Mountain scored three to tie it up 3-3.
- The Mavericks added to the board after taking a 7-3 lead in the top of the fifth after Rios launched a 3-run home run before Smith followed it up with a solo home run of her own.
- The Panthers scratched one more in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-4.
- Georgia State tied things up in the bottom of the seventh with a 3-run home run from the bat of Abby Brown that made it a 7-7 ball game.
- Georgia State went on to plate the winning run after an RBI-single. The Mavericks suffered an 8-7 heartbreaker loss as they dropped the conference series.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will set their focus to a midweek matchup at Abilene Christian Tuesday, Apr. 12 with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
