Softball Tabs SBC Series Sweep in Doubleheader

ARLINGTON – The Mavericks secured their third conference series sweep this season after picking up a pair of wins from Georgia Southern at Allan Saxe Field Saturday.

UTA defeated the Eagles in game two, 9-5, and game three, 6-0 as the Mavs improve their overall record of 20-17 and 10-8 in Sun Belt play.

Over the course of the weekend, third baseman KJ Murphy led the Mavericks offensively going 5-9 with a total of four RBI. The graduate student collected a home run in game one and two home runs in game three of the series as she now has five long balls on the year.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at Georgia Southern (W, 9-5)
KJ Murphy paced UTA's offense going 2-2 at the plate – the lone Mav to notch a multi-hit game. Adding to the Mavericks' seven total hits was Kaylee Cavazos (1-2, 1 RBI), Sophie Wideman (1-1, 2 RBI), Morgan Rios (1-3, 2 RBI), Meagan Smith (1-4, 1 RBI) and Kimber Cortemelia (1-1, 1 RBI) all came away with one hit apiece.

Freshman Morgan Max earned her second start of the year in the circle for the Mavs as she went on to throw 4.0 innings limiting Georgia Southern's offense to just three hits. Max tabbed four strike outs across 19 batters faced.

Sophomore Gracie Bumpurs came in for Max and threw the remainder of the contest. The right-hander gave up four earned runs off four hits.

The Mavericks went on to defeat the Eagles 9-5 giving Max her second win of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY: at Georgia Southern (W, 9-5)

  • The Mavs added to their lead in the bottom of the second as Rios came in clutch with an RBI-double over the right fielder's head which brought around White and Murphy. UTA headed in the third leading by 4.
  • The Eagles were scoreless up until the fifth inning where Sam Vinson knocked a 3-run home run to cut the deficit down to 1.
  • After Jessica Carreon reached on an Eagle error, 2 walks from White and Murphy loaded the bases for the Mavs. Back-to-back singles from Cavazos and Wideman extended UTA's lead 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at Georgia Southern (W, 6-0)
Graduate student Murphy led the Mavericks again in the final game of the series as she launched two home runs going 2-3 with 2 RBI. Murphy now has a total of five home runs on the year.

However, Murphy wasn't the only Mav to go yard as sophomore Jessica Carreon (1-2, 1 RBI) tabbed her first career home run with a solo shot over the center field wall.

Kimber Cortemelia (1-2), Amber Langston (1-2) and Morgan Max (1-1) contributed to UTA's six total hits.

Jessica Adams held it down in the circle for the Mavericks as the freshman threw her 13th complete game this season. Across 21 batters, the right-hander did not allow a single run across as she would manage to limit the Eagles to just three hits. Adams tabbed her 12th win of the season as she sits on a 12-11 record.

PLAY BY PLAY: at Georgia Southern (W, 6-0)
  • The Mavericks jumped to a 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning after Rios recorded a sacrifice fly that brought Murphy around from third. A wild pitch allowed for Carreon to score.
  • UTA added to the board with a solo home run from the bat of KJ Murphy – her fourth home run of the season – which extended the Mavs' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
  • The Mavericks tabbed a 3-run fifth inning as Murphy went yard for the second time as it put the Mavs up 4-0. From there, Carreon launched her first-ever career home run as her solo shot made it a 5-0 ball game. Reagan Hukill reached on a fielder's choice which allowed for Cortemelia to come around.
  • UTA went on to take game three of the series ending in sweep over the Eagles.
