Sumbler Single Walks Off Red Wolves

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington baseball team opened the weekend with a walk-off win over Arkansas State on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark, defeating the Red Wolves 4-3 with a Cade Sumbler single past the second baseman.

Tanner King (ND) started for the Mavericks, tying a career-high 8.0 innings pitched. The senior struck out four batters and allowed three runs.  David Moffat (W, 1-6) came on in relief in the ninth inning, striking out six batters across three scoreless innings.

The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the night, as Matthew Cavanagh and Cade Sumbler finished with multi-hit performances.  Boone Montgomery led the Mavericks with two RBI.

UTA bats were going early and often to begin the game, picking up four hits in the second inning and scoring three runs.  Cason Gregory hit a sacrifice fly before Boone Montgomery connected on a double to left field to push two runs home.

The Red Wolves used a pair of solo home runs in the fourth and seventh inning to inch closer to the Mavericks.

With a 3-2 lead, King returned to the mound looking for his first complete game. After a leadoff walk, Moffat would replace King. Arkansas State hit a double down the right field line to score the game-tying run.

In the bottom of the 11th, Tyler Rice used an eight-pitch at bat to earn a walk, proceeding to second with a wild pitch. Cavanagh hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, allowing Rice to advance to third. Sumbler found a gap in the four-hole, allowing Rice to score and lift the Mavericks past the Red Wolves.

UTA will look to clinch the series tomorrow (April 30) at 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
