ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA Mavericks baseball (13-30, 5-15 SBC) lost 9-2 on Saturday to Arkansas State (10-28, 5-14 SBC) at Clay Gould Ballpark in extra innings.
Michael Wong (ND) threw the opening four innings and finished with only one earned run against his ledger while adding two strikeouts.
Matt Novis (L, 0-3) carried the bulk of the innings, spinning five innings giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Jack Hagan (0.2 IP) and
Trevor Pruitt (0.1 IP) finished the final frame for the Mavs.
UT Arlington collected ten hits in the afternoon, led by multi-hit efforts from
Wilson Galvan,
Matthew Cavanagh,
Cade Sumbler and
Cason Gregory.
A-State opened the game with a pair of singles, but the threat ended with a double play converted by
Boone Montgomery when the runner on second base attempted to advance on a fly out to center field.
The scoring began in the fourth inning with the Red Wolves grabbing a 1-0 lead with back-to-back doubles to begin the inning. Despite later loading the bases, Wong and the Mavericks held firm to limit the damage.
UTA retaliated in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff walk and Galvan double off the left field wall placed both runners in scoring position. Cavanagh brought both home with a 2-RBI single into center field giving the home side a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mavs offense put together a two-out rally with singles from Sumbler and Gregory followed by a
Tanner Rice walk to load the bases but a diving catch by the left fielder ended the inning.
Arkansas State leveled the score at 2-2 in the seventh inning with a home run over the left field wall.
Both sides were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings to push the game into extra innings for the second-consecutive day, but the 10th was not as kind as on Friday night. The visitors were able to add seven runs, including two home runs, to give themselves an insurmountable 9-2 lead.
The Mavs will face off against the Red Wolves in the rubber match at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
