UTA Finishes 6th At Redhawk Invite

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – On a challenging scoring day for the entire field, the UT Arlington men's golf team wrapped up Seattle University's Redhawk Invitational from Chambers Bay Golf Course on Tuesday in sole possession of 6th place.

After Monday's 36 holes of action was canceled due to unsafe weather conditions, UTA and the rest of the 23-team field – which did make it through about a dozen holes before the horn blew – returned to the course on Tuesday for just one final round of action.

In that final round, the Mavericks posted a team total of 298 (+14), just one shot out of a tie for 4th and only 11 behind overall leader Boise State (287). Every single team finished at least 3-over, with two teams at +8 and all other clubs double-digit strokes over par in tough conditions.

INSIDE THE SCORES
  • Cox
Opened with a birdie on the par-5 1st, but his only other circle on the card came on the par-3 17th.

  • Gonzalez
Starting on the par-3 3rd, he sat at +4 through 11 holes, but was able to convert three birdies in his final seven holes against a pair of bogeys to come in with a 74.

  • Hicks
Bookended his round with birdies on the par-5 1st and par-5 18th holes, but in-between registered nothing except pars or bogeys.

  • Jones
Had nothing higher on his card than a bogey, and his two birdies came on the par-3 2nd and par-4 12th – the only two such birdies on those holes by UTA players.

  • Cronje
A bumpy first 11 holes in which he went 7-over yielded way to a respectable 1-under closing stretch of seven holes that included six pars and a birdie on the 18th.
THIS AND THAT
UTA finished tied for 2nd in the field in par-5 scoring for the day at 4.80 (-3) … individually, Hicks played those holes in -2 (4.33) to tie for the 2nd-best of the 120 players in the field … the Mavs recorded 12 total birdies, which were tied for the 4th-most in field … Gonzalez led the way with four sub-par holes to tie for the 3rd-most.

NEXT ON THE TEE
A busy month of April for UTA continues next week with the Mavs' final regular-season tournament at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic from Walden on Lake Conroe GC in Conroe, Texas. That will be UTA's last tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Championship Apr. 24-27.
