LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The UT Arlington baseball team (11-20, 4-7 SBC) fell to the Little Rock Trojans (15-12, 5-6 SBC) 4-3 at Gary Hogan Field on Saturday evening.
Michael Wong (ND) started for the Mavericks, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing two runs off five hits.
Gray Bailey faced one batter in relief, while
Matt Novis (L, 0-2) tossed the final two innings of the game.
UTA finished with nine hits as
Nick Pierce,
Tyler Rice and
Cason Gregory each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Matt Lumsden drove in all three runs for the Mavericks.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Maverick bats got rolling in the second.
Steven Saunders and
Tyler Rice reached base with back-to-back singles before
Matt Lumsden sent the ball flying over the right field wall for a three-run home run.
The Mavericks loaded the bases an inning later using a Saunders walk, Rice double and Lumsden intentional walk. But two quick outs ended the UTA threat.
Little Rock loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth for their first scoring opportunity. A hit batter pushed the first run home before Wong forced a ground out to third base to escape the jam.
Neither team would threaten again until the bottom of the seventh. With two quick outs, the Trojans hit a double down the right field line to put a runner in scoring position. Canyon McWilliams slid at first to beat a throw on a ground ball, while the baserunner at second turned third and took home.
Still tied at three in the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back singles put Trojans on first and second. With two outs, Little Rock hit a ground ball to second base. The runner at second rounded third and beat the throw home for the walk-off Trojan win.
UTA will look to close out the series with a win tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field.
