STATESBORO, Ga. – A ninth inning rally came up short for the UT Arlington baseball team on Thursday night, falling to Georgia Southern 5-3 at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Tanner Kings (L, 2-6) started for the Mavericks, tossing 7.0 innings He allowed four runs off 11 hits.
Cade Citelli came on in relief, throwing the final inning and allowing one run.
The Mavs finished with nine hits on the night, led by the 2-for-4 night by
Boone Montgomery.
Steven Saunders and
Tyler Rice drove both drove in one run.
The Mavericks threatened in the first inning, beginning with a leadoff single from
Jaden Brown. UTA would load the bases, but unable to score any runs as the Eagles ended the threat with a ground out.
Southern would score two runs in the home half of the inning, using three hits to take the lead over the Mavericks.
The Eagles would add another run in the third inning using a fielding error to plate one run and take a three-run lead.
In the fifth innings, a sacrifice fly would add a fourth run to the Southern lead before an eighth inning solo home run made the score 5-0.
The Mavericks embarked on a rally in the ninth inning, beginning the inning with a single and double to put runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly from
Steven Saunders would begin the scoring.
Tyler Rice followed with a single through the right side of the infield to push home the second run before a wild pitch scored the third run of the inning for the Mavericks.
A strikeout would end the game and end the rally for the Mavericks as UTA fell 5-3.
