Maverick Rally Comes Up Short Against Cajuns

LAFAYETTE, La. – A late surge by the UT Arlington baseball team was not enough, as the Mavericks fell in 11 innings to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at M.L. 'Tigue' Moore Field.

Cade Winquest (ND) started for the Mavericks, tossing 6.0 innings. He allowed five runs off eight hits while striking out four Cajuns.  David Moffat (L, 2-8) threw the final 5.2 innings, allowing one run off three hits while striking out five batters.

UTA finished with 11 hits as Boone Montgomery, Oscar Ponce and Matt Cavanagh each ended with multi-hit performances. Steven Saunders (2 RBI), Matt Lumsden (1 RBI) and Cavanagh (1 RBI) drove in the runs for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks went straight to work in the first. Boone Montgomery got things started with a single before Steven Saunders drove him in with a double off the top of the right field wall. Matt Cavanagh used a single to center field to score the second run before Matt Lumsden hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to give UTA the early 3-0 lead.

The Cajuns used a two-out rally in the bottom of the second to score one run, but Winquest struck out the final batter to strand Cajun runners at second and third.

Louisiana added two more runs in the fourth inning beginning wit a leadoff home run. A two-out single with a runner on third bases evened the game at three.

The Cajuns continued their comeback, using a two-run home run in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead.

After not scoring since the first inning, the Mavericks got one back in the eighth. With runners at second and third, Wilson Galvan hit a hard ground ball to shortstop and reached on an error to drive in one run for UTA.

With runners on first and second, Saunders hit a ground ball to first base and beat the throw to first with a head-first slide to prevent the game-ending double-play and score one run to tie the game at five.

The score stood tied at five until the 11th inning. With two outs in the home half of the inning, the Cajuns came away with back-to-back singles to score the game-winning run and complete the sweep over the Mavericks.
