ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (1-7, 0-2 WAC) was defeated 77-48 by Grand Canyon (6-2, 2-0 WAC) inside the College Park Center on Saturday afternoon in the Lady Mavs conference home opener.
The Lady Mavs had three players in double digits on the offensive end, led by
Nya Threatt who posted a career high 17 points, hitting four triples and knocking down three of her four free throws. The four three-pointers were also a career high for her. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists. The five field goals Threatt hit tied her career high and is the most she has hit this season.
Avery Brittingham secured her fourth double-double of the season, dropping 10 points and snagging 14 rebounds. The 14 rebounds are the most that Brittingham has collected in a Lady Mavs uniform and six shy of her career high that she set back in January of 2023 against California Baptist when she was a member of the Stephen F. Austin squad. 12 of those 14 rebounds came on the defensive end, making that 58 total defensive rebounds for the year so far. She also finished with one assist and one steal.
Gia Adams had a solid afternoon, scoring 12 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the field and going a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe in 30 minutes. Adams also pulled down two rebounds, garnered two steals and had two assists.
Grand Canyon came out scorching hot, hitting 11 of their 16 shots in the first quarter as well as playing some stifling defense and found themselves up 26-8, despite missing five of their seven free throw attempts. The Lady Mavs were able to settle in and put up 21 points in the second quarter which was capped off by a Threatt buzzer beater where she drove the entire floor and put up a floater from the free throw line to have UTA headed to the locker room down 43-29.
The third quarter was sloppy for both teams, as GCU scored 11 points while the Lady Mavs put up six points. The Lopes finished the game how they started, hitting nine of their 14 shots.
NEXT UP
The Lady Mavs will hit the road once more as they plunge back into non-conference play, traveling to Boulder to take on the 7th-ranked Buffaloes of Colorado on Tuesday, December 5, with tip-off scheduled for a noon central time start.
