CELINA, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team took back-to-back losses from Sam Houston and McNeese Saturday in day two of the Tracy Beard College Classic, placing the Mavericks at an even 4-4 overall record.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Sam Houston (L, 8-15)
UTA's offense notched three home runs late in the game from the bats of
Reagan Hukill,
Lindsey Franklin and
Morgan Westbrook that contributed to the Mavericks' eight runs.
The trio came away with two RBI apiece as sophomore
Paris Brienesse logged a multi-hit game going 2-3 at the plate. UTA was awarded a total of 11 walks from the Bearkat pitching staff but was unable to capitalize leaving 11 on base.
Righty
Jessica Adams earned the start on the mound for the Mavs as she tossed two innings allowing three runs off six hits before
Gracie Bumpurs made an appearance.
Bumpurs came in for Adams in the top of the third as she pitched three innings and faced 18 batters. Freshman
Tamya Waiters went on to throw the remainder of the game but UTA's offense failed to battle back giving Adams her second loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Sam Houston (L, 8-15)
- The Bearkats scored first in the top of the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead off four hits before UTA added one to the board off Franklin's solo bomb.
- The following inning, Sam Houston extended its lead to 4-1 with an RBI-double from the bat of Haley Mountain.
- After a quiet fourth inning on both sides, the Kats' bats broke out in the top of the fifth inning after the team piled on six runs to make it a 10-1 game. The Mavericks answered back with four of their own off a 2-run home run from Westbrook, an RBI-double from junior Zaia Castruita and three walks.
- Heading into the sixth inning, the game stood at 10-5. The Bearkats went on to plate five more runs across the final two innings.
- Even with a 2-run home run from Hukill and an RBI from Franklin, the Mavericks' attempted comeback fell just short, falling to Sam Houston 15-8.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. McNeese (L, 8-0)
Unlike UTA's first game on Saturday, the Mavericks' lineup struggled to not only put up hits, but base runners as well after the team logged just one hit against the Cowgirls.
Castruita (1-2) was the one responsible for the lone hit after tabbing her second double of the season.
Waiters earned her first start of the 2023 against McNeese after the righty threw just over two innings of work and allowed five earned runs off eight hits.
Bumpurs threw the rest of the game limiting the Cowgirl's lineup to just two hits. Unfortunately, UTA could not get anything going giving Waiters her first loss.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. McNeese (L, 8-0)
- Aside from Castruita's double in the top of the first, the Mavericks bats went cold.
- McNeese scored four in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the third off a total of 10 hits.

UTA will conclude Tracy Beard College Classic action Sunday with a 10 a.m. start against South Dakota.
