ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team falls in game 2 of the series to McNeese by a final score of 12-8.
The Mavericks couldn't muster up much offense in the first four innings of play and trailed 2-0 entering the 5th, where they exploded for 6 runs.
The scoring barrage began with a
Sam Crowell single to score
Zach Henry followed by a
Cason Gregory sacrifice bunt to bring in
Garrison Berkley. A bases loaded walk to
Ryan Black brought in the third run of the inning before
Tyson Pointer doubled to right center field to clear the bases, giving the Mavs a 6-2 lead.
McNeese answered back in the top of the sixth plating 3 runs. UTA responded with a run on a
Matt Cavanagh sacrifice fly to center to score Berkley, giving the Mavs a 7-5 lead.
McNeese would go on to tie the game 7-7 in the top of the seventh before taking the lead in the eighth, scoring 3 runs to go up 10-7. UTA scored 1 run in the bottom of the inning to pull within 2. The Cowboys would go on to plate 2 more runs in the top of the ninth and finish off the game to take the victory 12-8.
UTA used a total of 3 pitchers in the effort, with
Bryce Hackett getting the start on the mound, going 5 innings and giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 7 hits and striking out 1 and walking 1.
Connery Peters was tabbed with the loss, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout in 2 innings of work.
Gray Bailey finished the final 2 innings for the Mavs, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1.
Offensively, UTA tallied 7 hits, walking 6 times and striking out 9 times and leaving 5 runners stranded on base. Pointer had the big double, his only hit of the contest and leading the Mavs with 3 RBIs. Crowell led the team with 2 hits while driving in 1 run. Black, Berkley,
Steven Saunders and
Ben Lumsden each finished with 1 hit apiece to round out the hits for the Mavs.
UTA looks to take the final game of the series tomorrow, Feb. 26, at Clay Gould Ballpark with first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
