Mavs Take Bobcats Into Extras; Fall 6-5

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After a hard-fought extra inning matchup against Texas State Saturday night, the UT Arlington softball team fell to the Bobcats 5-6 from Bobcat Softball Stadium.

Saturday's game marked the second time the Mavs took the Bobcats into extras over the weekend with the first one back in the opening game of the Texas State Classic this past Thursday.

Sophomore Paris Brienesse hit a whopping .467 at the plate going 7-15 over the weekend. The infielder tallied five stolen bases and one RBI.

Following Brienesse was outfielder Nicole Hill who finished 4-14 across five games.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Texas State (L, 5-6) 8 Innings
  • Through three scoreless innings, the Bobcats scored first in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double from Megan Kelnar to take a 2-0 lead.
  • UTA got the fifth inning started with back-to-back singles from Erickson and Hill that placed runners on first and second with Brienesse up. The sophomore ripped a line drive to right center that brought around Erickson from second, making it a one-run game.
  • In their last at-bats, the Mavericks had Brienesse get on with an infield single before Hukill knocked her in from first with an RBI-double in the left center gap to tie things up 2-2.
  • TXST was unable to answer back as the game went into extra innings.
  • In the top of the eighth, Morgan Westbrook pinch ran for Wideman at second – due to international tie breaker rules. Westbrook advanced to third off a single through the left side from Cortemelia who advanced to second on the throw. Sgambelluri knocked in Westbrook from third with a single through the right side to place the Mavs on top 3-2. Shortly after, a throwing error allowed for another run to come across for UTA, making it a 4-2 game. Marley Neises would be responsible for the Mavericks fifth run of the game with a fielder's choice to second base which let Sgambelluri score from third.
  • The Mavs sat in a good spot up three runs heading into the bottom of the eighth before the Bobcats plated four runs off a bases-loaded walk, a UTA error and two RBI-singles that led to a 6-5 walk-off win.
