WICHITA, Kan.– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (9-5) defeated Wichita State 4-3 on Thursday  at the Genesis Health Club. The last time the Mavericks beat the Shockers was in 2017.
 
The Mavs started off strong by taking the doubles point for the early lead.
 
After going down 0-3, Lachlan Robertson and Joan Torres Espinosa broke twice to get ahead on Court 3. They finished off the set with a 6-4 win over Alejandro Jacome and Richey King.
 
Santiago Giamichelle and Dante Teramo were the next pair to finish on Court 2. The 6-4 win over Misha Kvantaliani and Orel Ovil clinched the advantage for the Mavericks heading into singles action.
 
The Shockers fought back in singles play, but the Mavericks were too much to overcome.
 
Robertson took the first singles point for the Mavs on Court 5 over King. After Robertson earned a double-break to go up 5-1, King fought back to bring the score to 5-4 in the first set. Robertson finished the first set 6-4. He then carried the momentum into the second set, earning another double-break to go up 5-2 and holding to finish the set 6-2.
 
Anton Shepp was the next to finish, moving his record to 10-3 for the season on Court 1. Shepp started the first set with a double-break to go up 4-1 against Kvantaliani. Kvantaliani fought back to bring the score to 5-4, but Shepp finished the first set winning 6-4.
 
The second set followed in a similar fashion, with Shepp breaking to go up 4-2. He held serve to go up 5-2, then allowed Kvantaliani one more game to take the second set 6-3.
 
Torres Espinosa fell to Luke Bracks on Court 4 to bring the score to 2-1. In a close first set, Torres Espinosa fell short a break to drop the set 6-4. After getting broken early to go down 0-2, he broke back to bring the score to tie the score at 3-3. Bracks then broke back to go up 5-3, then held to take the set 6-3.
 
Teramo retaliated by securing the match for the Mavericks with a win on Court 6. After staying on-serve during the first set, Teramo forced a break to go up 4-2 over Duccio Petreni, then held to go up 5-2. He allowed Petreni one more game before taking the first set 6-3.
 
Petreni started off strong in the second set, breaking Teramo's serve to go up 3-1. Teramo broke back to bring the score to 3-3, then the match stayed on-serve until the tiebreaker. The Mavericks came out victorious after Teramo dominated in the tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (2).
 
Solano Caffarena dropped the next match to Jacome on Court 2 after falling in a tight first set. After getting broken to go down 5-3, Cafferena broke back and held serve to bring the score back to 5-5. He forced the set to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 (5) to Jacome for the first set.
 
Jacome was too much for Caffarena to overcome in the second set, earning an early double break to go up 4-0. Cafferna fought back to earn two games, but Jacome finished off the set 6-2.
 
Giamichelle finished the final match of the day, falling in a close deciding-set tiebreaker match to Alex Richards. After being down a break in the first set, Giamichelle was able to tie the score at 4-4. He then broke and took the set 6-4.
 
Richards fought back to take the second set, breaking Giamichelle's serve to go up 3-1. He then took the set 6-3 to force a deciding set tiebreaker for the match.
 
After Giamichelle went up by four points in the tiebreaker, Richards fought back to bring the score to 7-7. The score went back and forth until Richards was able to close out the match 10-8.
 
The Mavericks are set to be back in action on March 25 to defend their previous win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi at 10 a.m.. The next match at the UTA Tennis Center is set for March 30 against Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
