Late Inning Runs Forged Mavs Past Texans

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (9-12, 3-3 WAC) defeated the Tarleton Texans (14-7, 1-2 WAC) in a tightly contested game on Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Offensively, the Mavericks finished with eight hits as a team, spearheaded by Steven Saunders and Ryan Black

Saunders crushed his first home run of the season, a no doubter to right field that cleared the trees out beyond the fence, bringing home the first two runs of the game for UTA. Saunders also drove in one run on a sacrifice fly to deep center field that tied the game, 4-4. He finished his night with three runs driven in.

Black concluded his night with two hits while knocking in three runs and drawing two walks. His big two RBI single in the bottom of the 8th was the deciding factor in the game, giving the Mavs their first lead and essentially the victory.

Garrison Berkley and Wilson Galvan ended their night with two hits each and both scoring one run. Matt Lumsden picked up a base hit and scored one run to round out the offensive output for the Mavericks.

In what was a bullpen game for both squads, 16 total pitchers were used tonight amongst the two teams.

The Mavericks sent out to the mound eight different pitchers, with each going one inning besides Jack Hagan who tossed two innings to pick up the win on the hill for the Mavericks. Hagan allowed one run on four hits while striking out one.

Colby Diduch got the start for UTA, walking one while punching out two batters and not giving up a hit. Joe Steeber, Hunter Marshall, Gage Singer, Gray Bailey, Bryce Hackett, and Andrew Lucas all took the bump for the Mavs this evening, each going one full inning.

The scoring came in twos on the night for the Mavericks, scoring two runs in three separate innings.

Tarleton got on the board early, scoring one run in the 2nd inning and plating two more runs in the top of the 4th. The Mavericks responded by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning to make it a 3-2 ball game.

In the 7th, Tarleton brought home one more run to go up two, 4-2. UTA answered back by driving in two runs to tie the ball game at four runs apiece. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Mavericks took their first lead of the contest by scoring two runs to bring the score to 6-4. The Texans added one more run in the top of the 9th before UTA shut the door to earn a 6-5 victory.
