RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After a valiant effort from UTA in two close contests, the Mavericks dropped both games Friday at California Baptist with final scores of 3-2 and 5-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at California Baptist (L, 3-2)
The Mavericks put up three hits in Friday's series-opener as
Marley Neises (1-3),
Meagan Smith (1-3) and
Alaina Hampton (1-2, 1 RBI) were the three responsible.
Freshman Hampton logged her first hit in a UTA uniform with a triple down the right field line – which broke up CBU's no-hitter – in the top of the sixth.
Jessica Adams and
Gracie Bumpurs split time in the circle for the Mavs as Adams got the start. The sophomore faced 16 Lancers, allowing two earned runs off six hits.
Bumpurs came in to toss the remainder of the game, limiting CBU to just one hit across three innings. With UTA unable to fight back, Adams was given the loss.
PLAY BY PLAY: at California Baptist (L, 3-2)
- The Lancers hopped to an early 1-0 lead after a UTA error in the bottom of the second.
- Kimber Cortemelia led the top of the third off with a walk before advancing to second off a sacrifice bunt from Zaia Castruita. After Cortemelia stole third, Hampton knocked her in with an RBI-ground out which tied things up 1-1.
- In the bottom of the third, CBU took the lead 3-1 after another Maverick error and an RBI-single up the middle.
- Hampton tripled down the right field line to grab UTA's first hit of the game as Neises knocked her in with an RBI-single up the middle to make it a 3-2 game in the top of the sixth.
- Mavs struggled to tie things up, falling to CBU 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at California Baptist (L, 5-4)
Smith (2-4) and
Sophie Wideman (2-3, 2 RBI) notched a multi-hit game as
Reagan Hukill (1-4),
Jadyn Erickson (1-1),
Morgan Westbrook (1-4) and Cortemelia (1-2, 1 RBI) also contributed to the Mavericks' eight-hit total.
Bumpurs nearly threw her first complete game after tossing 6.1 innings. The junior faced 29 batters, allowing five runs off eight hits.
Freshman
Tamya Waiters made an appearance in the bottom of the seventh inning, seeing just three batters. UTA fought hard, but fell short to the Lancers, giving Bumpurs her sixth loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: at California Baptist (L, 5-4)
- UTA tabbed a 3-run first inning as the Mavs scored off a Lancer error followed by back-to-back singles from Wideman and Cortemelia.
- CBU scored one in the bottom of the fourth off a fielder's choice that made it a 3-1 game.
- In the bottom of the second, the Lancers tied things up 3-3 after a Maverick error and an RBI-single down the right field line.
- The game remained tied up until the bottom of the fourth inning when CBU ran a successful squeeze play that put the Lancers up 4-3.
- With two outs, Westbrook knocked a double down the left field line and advanced to third off a single up the middle from Smith. Wideman came in clutch with an RBI-double in the right center gap that tied things up 4-4 in the top of the fifth.
- CBU walked things off in the bottom of the seventh off a single in the right center gap.

The Mavericks will conclude their series at California Baptist with the final game of the weekend Saturday, Mar. 25 with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. from John C. Funk Stadium.
