Clutch Hitting, Stellar Pitching Leads UTA to Back-To-Back Wins

ARLINGTON, Texas – With stellar performances on the mound and timely hitting, the UT Arlington softball team powered past Kansas City and Rider in Saturday's doubleheader as the Mavs are now 3-1 for Boerner Invitational play and 9-10 overall.
 
Marley Neises finished with four hits on the day with one home run and three RBI as Lindsey Franklin had two long balls of her own and a total of five RBI across both games.
 
Junior Morgan Westbrook's bat also proved to be key in Saturday's wins as she finished 3-6 at the plate with three RBI.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Kansas City (W, 11-4)
The Mavericks' offense broke out in Saturday afternoon's game again the Kansas City Roos as the squad compiled 11 runs off 16 hits.
 
Sophie Wideman (3-3) and Marley Neises (3-4, 3 RBI) finished with three hits apiece followed by Ashleigh Sgambelluri (2-3, 1 RBI) and Morgan Westbrook (2-4, 3 RBI) who came away with two.
 
Senior Lindsey Franklin launched her second home run of the season with a grand slam as Neises tabbed her first collegiate home run against the Roos.
 
Freshman Tamya Waiters earned the start on the mound and faced six batters before junior Gracie Bumpurs came in. Bumpurs allowed two runs off two hits after throwing two innings.
 
Righty Jessica Adams pitched the remainder of the game, limiting Kansas City's bats to just one hit. With the Mavs' electric offense in the 11-4 win, Adams got her fifth victory of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Kansas City (W, 11-4)
  • Kansas City scored first in its first time up off a UTA error and a ground out that put the Roos up 2-0.
  • Westbrook tied things up in the bottom of the second with an RBI-double in the left center gap that scored Wideman and Cortemelia.
  • The Roos quickly answered back in the top of the third off to take the lead 4-2 with an RBI-single and a ground out.
  • The Mavs turned in a breakout fifth inning as the squad put up five runs off five hits. All with two outs, Wideman collected her second hit of the game with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Sgambelluri knocked a single up the middle that scored Wideman to cut the deficit down by one. Pinch-hitter Jacquelyn Adams, Westbrook, Neises and Hukill put up hits of their own as Neises launched a 3-run home run to put the Mavs up 7-4.
  • UTA went on to extend its lead to 11-4 courtesy of a grand slam from Franklin in the bottom of the sixth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Rider (W, 2-1) 8 Innings
Fifth Year Meagan Smith paced the Mavericks' offense going 2-4 at the plate with one RBI as the infielder was the one responsible for the go-ahead run that led to UTA's 2-1 win.
 
Of the Mavs' seven hits, Jadyn Erickson (1-1), Morgan Westbrook (1-2) and Marley Neises (1-3) contributed to UTA's total.
 
Senior Franklin's bat was red-hot as she put up her third long ball of the season – her second of the day – that now places her with 12 RBI on the year.
 
Jessica Adams got the start in the circle for UTA and threw just one inning before Tamya Waiters came in and tossed three innings. Waiters went on to allow one run off four hits across 14 batters faced.
 
Junior Bumpurs logged her third win of the year after retiring all 12 Roos, not allowing a single hit through four innings.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Rider (W, 2-1) 8 Innings
  • With a scoreless first inning, the Broncs scored first with an RBI-single up the middle from Amanda Cooper that put Rider up 1-0.
  • The score remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning as Franklin belted her second home run of the day that tied things up at 1-1 with two outs.
  • Bumpurs and the Mavericks' solid defense kept the Broncs off the board even with a runner placed on second due to the international tie breaker rules.
  • Neises was placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth inning as Hukill advanced her to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Smith came in clutch for UTA as she ripped a single past left field to score the winning run, defeating Rider 2-1.
ON DECK
The Mavs will conclude Boerner Invitational action Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. start time against Lamar at Allan Saxe Field.
