Home Runs Aid UTA to Comeback Win

ARLINGTON, Texas – With a seven-run sixth inning, the UT Arlington softball team (14-18, 4-5) pulled off a comeback win Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field, taking the series against Utah Tech with a final score of 8-5.
 
Senior Sophie Wideman cut the deficit to two runs after a solo shot in before freshman Alaina Hampton came in clutch as she gave UTA a 6-4 lead with her first grand slam of her career. Senior Meagan Smith showcased her power and launched a two-run home run which later secured the series against the Trailblazer.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs Utah Tech (W, 8-5)
Marley Nieses (2-3), Kimber Cortemelia (2-3) and Alaina Hampton (2-3, 4 RBI) all paced UTA's offense with a multi-hit contest. Reagan Hukill (1-2), Meagan Smith (1-4, 2 RBI), Sophie Wideman (1-4, 1 RBI), Paris Brienesse (1-1) and Lindsey Franklin (1-3) all contributed to the Mavs' 11-hit total.
 
UTA relied on the arm of Jessica Adams who threw her sixth complete game with win no. 10 on the season. The righty faced 33 Trailblazers, allowing three earned runs of 10 hits.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs Utah Tech (W, 8-5)
  • Hukill and Neises led things off in the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles as Hukill went on to score on a passed ball.
  • After a scoreless second and third, UTU put up a four-run fourth inning as the Trailblazers pieced four runs off five hits, taking the lead 4-1.
  •  The Mavericks compiled a five-run sixth inning after Wideman knocked a solo shot followed by a grand slam from the bat of Hampton which put UTA up 6-4. Not long after, Smith smacked her fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot that extended UTA's lead to 8-4.
  • The Trailblazers were able to scratch one across in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, making it an 8-5 game.
  • UTA was able to hold it down, taking the series against UTU with a final score of 8-5.
ON DECK
UTA will take a break from midweek action as the team will travel to Stephen F. Austin for a three-game conference series beginning Friday, Apr. 7 through Saturday, Apr. 8 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
