Bats Explode in Game Two Win; Fall to ACU in Series Finale

ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite a stellar offensive performance in game one of Saturday's doubleheader win, the UT Arlington softball team (17-22, 7-8) dropped the final game of the series against Abilene Christian.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Abilene Christian (W, 16-7) 5 Innings
UTA's offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Mavericks turned in a total of 16 runs – 11 coming from the fourth inning alone.
 
Marley Neises (2-4, 4 RBI), Morgan Westbrook (2-4, 1 RBI) and Kimber Cortemelia (2-3, 3 RBI) led the way, coming away with multi-hit efforts.
 
Reagan Hukill (1-3), Meagan Smith (1-2, 2 RBI), Sophie Wideman (1-2) and Zaia Castruita (1-2, 1 RBI) all contributed to the Mavericks' 10-hit total against ACU.
 
Gracie Bumpurs earned the start on the mound for the Mavs as she threw 3.1 innings, allowing five runs off six hits.
 
Adams came in and tossed the remainder of the game and faced nine batters. The Mavericks went on to defeat the Wildcats, 16-7, giving Adams her 10th win.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Abilene Christian (W, 16-7) 5 Innings
  • Abilene Christian scored first with off back-to-back RBI-doubles that put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the top of the first. Shortly after, a sacrifice fly extended ACU's lead to 3-0.
  • UTA got on the board with one – courtesy of an RBI-single up the middle from Cortemelia that made it a 3-1 game heading into the third.
  • In the bottom of the third, the Mavericks took a 5-3 lead with an RBI-single from Westbrook followed by a two-run home run from Smith. Fifth year Cortemelia plated UTA's fifth run with an RBI-ground out to shortstop.
  • ACU answered back with a three-run shot over the center field to put the Cats back on top 6-5.
  • The Mavs quickly responded with a whopping 11-run fifth inning as UTA put up four hits. Neises belted a grand slam that lifted the Mavericks to a 10-run lead that secured the run-rule win.

Neises continued her hot streak and finished 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Hukill (2-4) and Westbrook (2-4, 1 RBI) joined Neises in coming away with multiple hits.
 
Smith (1-4), Wideman (1-4), Cortemelia (1-2), Castruita (1-2) and senior Lindsey Franklin (1-3, 1 RBI) also put up hits in game two of the doubleheader.
 
This time around, Adams started in the circle for the Mavs and threw three innings, facing 18 Cats with three strike outs.
 
Bumpurs tossed the rest of the second game, limiting ACU's lineup to just two earned runs. Unfortunately, with the Mavs unable to answer back, Adams received the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Abilene Christian (L, 7-3)
  • ACU grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a single through the left side followed by a bases-loaded walk.
  • The Wildcats made it a 5-0 ball game with a pair of home runs in the top of the second inning.
  • UTA scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Westbrook was responsible with an RBI-single to center field.
  • ACU extended its lead to 7-1 after a two-run home run from Avery Miloch in the sixth.
  • Franklin went on to plate UTA's second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single to center field that brough across Cortemelia from third to cut the deficit down to five.
  • Neises launched her second home run of the day – fifth on the season – that got one more run added to the board for the Mavs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Unfortunately, UTA couldn't plate any more, falling to the Wildcats 7-3.
ON DECK
The Mavs will prepare for a lengthy road trip next week as the squad will hit the road down to Lake Charles, Louisiana for a midweek matchup at McNeese before flying out to New Mexico to face New Mexico State for a three-game WAC series (Apr. 21-22).
