Mavs Conclude Season-Opening Day At Suspended Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The UT Arlington men's golf team got its 2023-24 season underway on Monday with the first two rounds of the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff from Dalhousie Golf Club.

Hiroki Miya led the Mavericks with rounds of 76 and 75, and overall UTA resides in 12th place following totals of 303 and 310. LSU leads the tournament at -20, eight shots clear of Stetson (-12) as play was suspended due to severe weather with several groups on the course needing to complete a couple of holes.

Second-round action will conclude on Tuesday morning beginning at 7:45, and the final round will follow starting at 8:30 with tee times off the 1st and 10th holes. Pairings and tee times – in addition to scoring all day – will be available via Golfstat.

INSIDE THE SCORES
MIYA
Beginning his day on the 12th hole, the New Zealand native made a bogey on 15 but got it back with a birdie on the par-4 16th. However, that would be his only circle on the 1st-round card as four other bogeys resulted in the 4-over 76.

In the 2nd round, Miya sat at -1 after nine holes, but his 10th hole of the day – the 460-yard, par-4 3rd – resulted in a triple bogey. Aside from a bogey on the 9th, those were his only miscues on the scorecard en route to the 75.

MILLER
A graduate transfer from Kansas State, Miller got off to a rocky start by recording a triple on his third hole of the day – the par-4 17th. But he recovered with two birdies over his next five holes and remained at +1 before playing his last five holes in 3-over, which included a third birdie on the 14h, to shoot 76.

The 476-yard 17th again did Miller in during the 2nd round as he made a quadruple, but once again bounced back – this time in the form of UTA's first eagle of the year on the par-5, 540-yard 18th. He went on to roll in three more birdies on the round, but a 6 on the 3rd hole and a few other bogeys yielded his 77.

CRONJE
Cronje uncharacteristically struggled in his 1st round, posting an 81. That was the South African's first round in the 80s since the opening round of the Little Rock Invitational in October of 2021.

He settled down for the 2nd round with a pair of birdies over his first five holes, but a pair of big numbers prevented a better rebound performance with a 76.

KANTH
Kanth, a native of London, led the Mavs in the opening round by signing for a 74. The grad transfer struggled over his first seven holes with four bogeys between the 15th and 3rd. However, he rolled in three-straight birdies on the 4th, 5th and 6th holes, and made just one more bogey to account for the 2-over showing.

In the 2nd round, a trio of doubles or worse – an unfortunate trend for every UTA player in the afternoon – resulted in Kanth posting an 83.

BECK
The sophomore also couldn't get anything going as he commenced his day on the par-3 13th with a par, followed by a bogey, birdie and a double bogey in his first four holes. After that, he managed to settle in and finished off his round with a 77.

In round 2, a string of bogeys and a couple doubles were too much to overcome as he carded an 82.

THIS AND THAT
This was an uncharacteristic scoring performance for UTA as the Mavs had just four team rounds in the 300s all last season … the aforementioned 3rd hole did in UTA as the Mavs' quintet collectively played it in +8 during the 2nd round … this is UTA's earliest start to a season since 2009, when the Mavs competed in the then-named Golfweek Conference Challenge.
