Mavericks Earn First Two Home Wins Over Prairie View and Southeastern Oklahoma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (2-1) overcame injuries and an early deficit to defeat Prairie View A&M 4-1 and Southeastern Oklahoma 6-1 in their home-opening double header on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center.

The Mavs had to default Court 3 doubles against the Panthers due to injury, so the early lead came down to Courts 1 and 2.

Dante Teramo and Yazid Lahjomri had a dominant performance on Court 1 to even the doubles score. The match stayed close until 3-3, then Teramo and Lahjomri did not drop another game. They closed out the match over Diego Hatem and Eduardo Nunez del Prado Flores 6-3.

The 1-0 advantage came down to Court 2 in a tight match with Pedro Sasso and Andres Medus. Abdulraheem Isa and Xavier Peter-Gooding kept the match close, staying on-serve to force a tiebreaker. The Panthers could not overcome the Mavs in the tiebreaker, with Sasso and Medus dominating for a final score of 7-6 (1).

The Mavericks did not have a player on Court 6 due to injury, so the score was 1-1 to start singles play.

Teramo was the first to finish, dropping only one game to Isa on Court 1. After taking the first set 6-1, Teramo was able to close out the second in a dominant fashion, earning the 6-1, 6-0 win to put the Mavs up 2-1.

Lahjomri was the next off, earning his first win as a Maverick on Court 5. He only dropped one game to Jaydn Boone, earning the 6-1, 6-0 win to put the Mavs one win away from clinching the match.

Meethre Barot clinched the win on Court 4 in his debut singles match for the Mavs. The first set was close, coming down to a tiebreaker with Barot finishing 7-6. He then only allowed Peter-Gooding only three games, finishing 6-3.

Medus and Sasso did not complete their matches on Courts 2 and 3 as the match had been decided.

The Mavericks carried the singles momentum into the afternoon match, winning all six singles matches after dropping the doubles point.

Sasso and Medus were the first off after a strong 6-1 performance over Luis Ching and Vinicius Outor on Court 3. Gen Naraya and Thabo Ncube evened the score after defeating Barot and Solano Caffarena 6-3 on Court 2.

The early advantage came down to Court 1 in a close match, with Teramo and Lahjomri falling in a tiebreaker by two points. The Mavs could not break Juan Gonzalez's and Marin Jurkovic's serve, which brought the match to 6-6. The tiebreaker came down to the final points, with Southeastern Oklahoma closing out the match 7-6 (5).

The Mavericks fought back to earn six wins without dropping a singles match to secure the second win of the day.

Sasso was the first off on Court 5, defeating Jurkovic in straight sets. He delivered a strong 6-1, 6-2 performance to even the match score.

Barot finished in a similar manner against Naraya to make him 2-0 in singles matches for the season so far. The first set stayed close until 3-3, when Barot broke to take the next three games for the win. The second set finished with Barot dropping only two games for the 6-3, 6-2 win.

Graduate senior Caffarena earned his first victory of the 2024 season over Ncube on Court 2. Caffarena did not drop a set, finishing 6-3, 6-1 to put the Mavs one win away from clinching the match.

Medus clinched the match, defeating Ching on Court 4. The first set stayed on-serve until the tiebreaker, with Medus finishing victorious 7-6 (4). He carried that momentum into the second set to close out the match 6-3.

Lahjomri and Teramo were the final two matches on court, both concluding with wins. Lahjomri defeated Outor in three sets on Court 6, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. Teramo ended the day on an exciting note, finishing with a 10-point tiebreaker win after dropping the second set to Gonzalez with a final score of 6-2, 6-7 (6), 10-4.
