WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team has had a successful start to the ITA Texas Regionals, claiming some big victories in doubles and singles through the first two days at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor.
Yazid Lahjomri defeated Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's Nicolas Trebuchet by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to move on to the round of 32 on the main draw stage.
Pedro Sasso defeated Imran Daniel Abdul Hazli of Baylor by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to join Lahjomri in the second round of the main draw stage.
All three doubles teams the Mavericks constructed moved on to the round of 32 on the main draw stage.
The team of Lahjomri and Sasso defeated Calvin Wang and Rahul Sachdev of Texas by a score of 8-4. Daniel Pérez-Caraballo and
Ian Uraga defeated the team of Nicolas Niox Chateau and Matthieu Coignet by a final score of 8-6.
Andres Medus and
Meethre Barot defeated UTRGV's Sam Whitehead and Ivo Isqueiro by a score of 8-4. Doubles play resumes on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m. CT.
In singles action of the main draw, Barot fell 6-0, 6-3 to Texas A&M's Giulio Perego. Medus fell to Baylor's Quintan Van Wijk in a tightly contested match 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-7 (4-7) to round out day two.
On day one, Thursday, Oct. 17, four of the six competing student-athletes punched their ticket to the main draw stage of regionals.
Sasso defeated Incarnate Word's Alexandre Chauvel Gobin by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Sasso would then defeat Abilene Christian's Matheus Lima by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Uraga defeated Rafael Candelas Ruiz of Incarnate Word by a score of 6-4, 6-2. He when then go on to face Sam Whitehead of UTRGV, falling to him 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Lahjomri fell to Abilene Christian's Ethan Scribner in a tightly contested match by a score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-6.
Pérez-Caraballo went 1-1 on the day, falling to Texas Tech's Brody Nejedly 2-6, 1-6 in his first action of the day. He would go on to defeat Prairie View A&M's Ethan Boswell 6-4, 6-2 to end his day.
Barot defeated Baylor's Luis Jose Nakamine by a score of 6-3, 6-3 in his lone action of the day.
