NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (11-12, 7-6 WAC) earned the season sweep over Stephen F. Austin (15-9, 9-4 WAC) on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Ladyjacks by a final score of 84-74 from inside the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Lady Mavs had five players in double figures led by
Gia Adams who finished with 18 points on 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-5 from deep as well as hitting 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She also grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists in 36 minutes of play, a new conference high in minutes for Adams.
Avery Brittingham had 15 points, two rebounds, four assists and tied her career-high with three blocks against her former team. She notched her 1000th career point on a layup with 2:47 left to go in the first quarter. Early foul trouble kept Brittingham out of most of the third quarter and some of the fourth, but she still made her presence felt when she returned, ending the game with a block and a smile.
Adela Valkova finished with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. In a new conference-high 34 minutes played, Valkova also grabbed seven boards while dishing out one assist. On the defensive end, she finished with a steal and added two blocks to her league-leading block total.
Masengo Mutanda had her best game in a Lady Mavs uniform, dropping 14 points on 4-for-6 from the field and hitting her first three-pointers of the season, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 from deep and finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed a season-high six rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
Taliyah Clark finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. It's her 15th game this season scoring double figures.
The Lady Mavs finished with 13 turnovers, the 8th time this season they've finished with 13 or less turnovers in a game. Defensively, UTA forced 15 SFA turnovers and capitalized by scoring 21 points off those turnovers.
The Ladyjacks came out swinging in the first quarter, hitting three three-pointers and going up by as many as five points. SFA would hold the lead for the majority of the first quarter and partially in the second before the Lady Mavs turned up the defensive pressure, forcing the Ladyjacks to go 0-for-10 from deep in the second while only managing eight points in the quarter.
UTA remained consistent throughout the remainder of the game, shooting 50-percent or above through the final three quarters. Going into halftime, the Lady Mavs carried a 39-31 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Mavs never trailed at any point during the second half, going up by as many as 18 points in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, the Ladyjacks attempted to mount a comeback, getting the lead down to three with a little over seven minutes left to go in the game. But the Lady Mavs remained cool, calm, and collected and had an answer for everything SFA threw at them.
The Lady Mavs led the majority of the game, 32:40 to be exact.
