ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (4-1) dropped their first match of the spring against SMU 4-0 at the UTA Tennis Center on Tuesday.
 
Doubles play was tight, coming down to two games before the Mustangs took the early lead.
 
Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara started the Mavs off strong, earning the strong win on Court 2. The pair defeated Maja Makoric and Millie Skelton 6-4 after earning an early lead in the match.
 
The Mustangs retaliated, taking Court 3 over Sarina Reinertsen and Ana Paula Jimenez to even the doubles score. The 6-3 win left the early advantage up to a close match on Court 1.
 
In a battle on Court 1, Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez fell by two games to Taylor Johnson and Lana Mavor. After the Mavericks maintained a one-game lead throughout the match, they could not overcome a late push from the Mustangs, dropping the match 6-4.
 
The Mavs fought hard in singles play, but the Mustangs earned the next three matches to clinch the win.
 
Manyoma-Velasquez was the first to finish, falling in straight sets to Johnson on Court 2. Johnson came out strong in the first set, allowing Manyoma-Velasquez only one game to take the set 6-1. The second set finished in a similar fashion with a score of 6-2.
 
Mavor's win over Vergara gave the Mustangs the 3-0 lead and put them one point away from securing the match. Vergara could not overcome Mavor, falling 6-3, 6-3 in her first loss of the spring season.
 
The Mustangs clinched the win on Court 3 with a straight set win over Reinertsen. Hadley Doyle started off strong in the first set, going up 5-2. Reinertsen fought back to bring the score to 5-4 but fell 6-4. Doyle played a strong second set, closing out the match and clinching the win 6-2.
 
In each of the Mavericks' unfinished matches, they were up one set.
 
Gorinsek played a strong first set on Court 1, winning 6-4 over No. 109 Drew Morris and was down 3-2 in the second. Jimenez was close to closing out her match on Court 4 as she was up 4-2 in the second set after winning the first over Makoric. On Court 6, Casampere was battling with Caroline McGinley. She was up 2-0 in the third set after splitting the first two sets.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center to face Wichita State at 2 p.m. They are also set for a doubleheader on Sunday with UT Dallas (10 a.m.) and Collin College (2 p.m.) at the UTA Tennis Center.
