Mavericks Unable To Overcome Shockers Despite Singles Push

ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (4-2) took their second loss of the spring season against Wichita State 4-0 at the UTA Tennis Center on Thursday.

The Shockers scored the first two doubles wins, earning them a 1-0 advantage early in the match.

Ana Paula Jimenez and Sarina Reinertsen were the first pair to fall. Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli secured the 6-2 win on Court 3 to put them one match from the doubles point.

The 1-0 lead came down to Courts 1 and 2 as the Mavericks battled to reverse the score. On Court 1, Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez fought hard against Natsumi Kurahashi and Xin Tong Wang, but the Shockers gained the 5-3 break then closed out the match 6-3.

The Mavericks made a push in singles play, but the Shockers were quick to take Courts 6, 1 and 5 to clinch the match 4-0.

Bruna Casasampere was the first to fall on Court 6 to Roselli in straight sets. Roselli gained an early lead in the first set which allowed her to close it out 6-2. Casasampere could not overcome Roselli in the second, dropping the final set 6-3.

Court 1 was the next to finish, with Gorinsek taking the loss against Kurahashi in two sets. The first set stayed on-serve until 3-3, when Kurahashi was able to make a three-game run for the 6-3 win. Kurahashi played a strong second set, allowing Gorinsek only one game before giving the Shockers 3-0 with the 6-1 win.

The Shockers took Court 5 in the final match, defeating Francisca Vergara for the win. After Chantava took the first set 6-3, Vergara made a push in the second set to go up 4-1. Chantava proceeded to win five games in a row to stifle the comeback for the Mavericks, winning 6-4.

Reinertsen, Manyoma-Velasquez and Jimenez all were gaining momentum on their courts when the match was decided.

After falling in a tight 7-6 (3) first set, Reinertsen had gained a 5-1 lead in the second set before the match was called on Court 2. Manyoma-Velasquez had come back after dropping the first set 6-4 to take the second 6-2. She was tied 2-2 on Court 3 when the Shockers clinched the match. Jimenez was one game away from winning on Court 4 over Anna Knuettel when the match finished. She had earned a 7-5, 5-2 lead.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Sunday for a doubleheader, hosting UT Dallas (10 a.m.) and Collin College (2 p.m.) at the UTA Tennis Center. These matches will be their last home matches until March 6.
