ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (6-2) recovered from their pair of losses with two 7-0 sweeps over UT Dallas and Collin College in Sunday's doubleheader at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks came out strong in their morning match against the Comets, dropping only two games in doubles play before clinching the lead.
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara dominated on Court 2, improving to 4-1 on the season. Strong net play helped the duo take down Elyssa Ducret and Megan Zeng 6-0 for the first doubles victory of the day.
Tara Gorinsek and
Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez put the Mavs on the scoreboard with a solid win on Court 1 over Rebecca Jackson and Saumya Vedula. The pair evened their record with the 6-1 win and secured the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The doubles momentum carried into singles play, with the Mavs winning six consecutive matches for the 7-0 win.
Casasampere built on her doubles win with a dominant performance on Court 5. She dropped only one game against Megan Zeng for the 6-1, 6-0 win and earned her fifth win of the spring. Gorinsek was quick to follow with her first 6-0, 6-0 win of the spring. The Court 1 victory over Jackson put the Mavs one point away from securing the match.
The Mavs clinched the match on Court 3 as
Ana Paula Jimenez earned another straight-set win over Vedula in a 6-2, 6-0 win. They continued their success after the match had been decided, with
Nika Novikova earning the next point. She recorded her first win of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 6 over Ducret.
Manyoma-Velasquez put the Mavs at 5-0 with a strong win on Court 2. The first set against Riya Matharoo came close, with each opponent staying within one game of each other. Defensive plays helped Manyoma-Velsquez recover to close out the set 7-5 and gain the lead. She built on her strong performance, dropping only one game in the second set for the 6-1 win.
The final match of the morning came down to Vergara and Reika Nagai on Court 4 in a deciding-set tiebreaker to end the morning. Vergara came out aggressive, taking the first set 6-0. Nagai played a scrappy second set, forcing Vergara to make errors which led to the 6-4 victory for the Comets. As the match had already been decided, the competitors played out a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. Vergara gained a strong four-point lead before she closed out the match with a 10-4 win.
The afternoon match concluded in a similar fashion as the Mavs did not drop a set in earning the 7-0 sweep over Collin College.
As a team, the Mavs dropped only one game in three doubles matches in securing the 1-0 advantage.
Court 3 kicked off doubles action with Jimenez and
Sarina Reinertsen earning their first doubles win of the day. The 6-0 win over Sophia Dalla and Alyssa Glasgow put the pair at 4-2 in dual matches and 5-3 overall.
Casasampere and Vergara clinched the lead on Court 2 in a 6-1 victory over Ekaterina Orlova and Gabriela Rodriguez for their fifth victory of the season. Gorinsek and Manyoma-Velasquez capped off doubles play with another 6-0 victory on Court 1 before singles action began.
The Mavericks did not allow the Cougars a set for the remainder of the match as they continued their success on each singles court.
Manyoma-Velasquez was the first off-court, earning her fifth win of the spring over Mikayla Plitt on Court 2. She took the 6-0 victory in set 1, hitting a variety of shots to keep Plitt on her toes. The second set concluded quickly, as Manyoma-Velasquez followed up with another 6-0 win.
Casasampere earned the next win on Court 5 over Dalla, dropping only one game for her second win of the day. Dalla earned one game in the first set before Casasampere closed out the match 6-1, 6-0.
Vergara clinched the match on Court 4 with another straight-set victory. After a dominant 6-1 finish to the first set, she capitalized on her momentum and closed out the second set 6-1 as well. The victory put Vergara at 5-2 in dual matches for the spring.
Novikova earned her second win of the day and the season as she carried out a 6-1, 6-2 performance over Glasgow. The Court 6 win put Novikova as one out of two Mavericks who remain undefeated in the spring.
Reinertsen played her first singles match of the day against the Cougars on Court 1. Orlova took the first game of the match, but Reinertsen proceeded to win the next twelve for the 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The doubleheader concluded with a win on Court 4 as Jimenez earned a straight-set victory over Gabriela Rodrigues. The first set stayed close, as Rodrigues earned a 4-3 advantage. Jimenez turned the match around after the change over as she battled to earn the next three games and the 6-4 win. Despite a late push from Rodrigues at 5-0, Jimenez was able to close out the second set 6-2 to end the day with a win.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday to take on TCU's Horned Frogs at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth at 5:30 p.m. Their next home match is slated for March 6 as they are set to take on North Texas at 2 p.m.
