FORT WORTH– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (6-3) took their third loss of the spring to TCU 6-1 on Wednesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Mavericks put pressure on the Horned Frogs in doubles play but could not overcome the host team.
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara were the first pair to fall in their second loss of the spring on Court 2. The pair kept the score close against Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual, battling hard to even the match at 3-3. The Horned Frogs gained some momentum to go up 5-3, but the Mavs won the next game to bring the set within one. Otway and Pascual managed to win the final game to close out the set 6-4.
Tara Gorinsek and
Mariana Manyoma Velasquez put up a fight on Court 1 to force a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell to Chiho Mushika and Yu-Chin Tsai. The score went back and forth, as Gorinsek and Manyoma fought to keep it even throughout the set. They eventually forced a tiebreaker, but Mushika and Tsai did not allow them a point, taking the match 7-6 (0).
Ana Paula Jimenez and
Sarina Reinertsen did not get to finish their doubles match on Court 3, but their 6-5 advantage put the pressure on the Horned Frogs before they clinched the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Horned Frogs came out strong in singles play, but the Mavericks kept the scores close on several courts and secured a win near the end of the match.
On Court 5, Vergara could not overpower No. 98 ranked Destinee Martins as she dropped the first singles match in straight sets. Martins came out aggressive, playing a dominant first set to win 6-0. Vergara put herself on the scoreboard in the first game of the second set to go up 1-0, but Martins won the next six games for the 6-1 win.
Next to fall was Court 6, where Casasampere took her second dual match loss to Mushika. Casasampere stayed close in the first set until 3-3, when Mushika ran away with the final three games to win 6-3. Mushika then gained a 3-1 lead in the second set, allowing Casasampere one more game before closing it out 6-2.
Despite a comeback effort on Court 3, Jimenez lost in straight sets to Tsai to give the Horned Frogs the clinch. Tsai played a strong first set, as she did not drop a game to Jimenez in taking the 6-0 win. She then went up 4-1 in the second set, before Jimenez gained momentum in taking the next game. Jimenez battled hard to bring the score to 4-3 then 5-4, but Tsai managed to close out the match 6-4 to give the Horned Frogs a fourth point.
The match continued after the clinch, as Gorinsek faced tough opponent Pascual on Court 1. After several no-ad points, Pascual ran away with the first set 6-2. Gorinsek kept the score tight in the second, as she rallied hard from the baseline to keep the set on-serve. Pascual earned a 5-4 lead before closing out the final game for the 6-2, 6-4 win.
Manyoma-Velasquez put the Mavericks on the scoreboard after closing out her match on Court 4 in a tiebreaker. The Kansas transfer faced former Big 12 opponent Helena Narmount, who took the first set 6-3, despite Manyoma-Velasquez winning the first two games. The momentum shifted in the second set, as Manyoma-Velasquez channeled her energy into winning 6-0 to even the score.
As the match had already been decided, a third set tiebreaker was to determine a winner. Manyoma-Velasquez got off to an early lead, as strong defensive plays gave her a 7-4 lead. Narmount made a small push near the end to bring her to 9-8 down, but Manyoma-Velasquez closed out the final point to take the tiebreaker 10-8.
The final match of the night came down to Court 2, where Reinertsen battled Otway in two close sets. Reinertsen stayed close in the first set, even earning a 4-3 lead at the changeover. A push from Otway gave her three games in a row to close out the set 6-4. The second set finished in a similar manner, with several games coming down to the no-ad point. Reinertsen could not wear Otway down, as she fell 6-4 in the second set.
The Mavericks look to bounce back in their next road match on Saturday, as they are set to take on Houston at 11 a.m. Their next match at the UTA Tennis Center is set for March 6 against North Texas at 2 p.m.
