Box Score ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (5-4) took down the Texas Tech Red Raiders in their Tuesday match at the UTA Tennis Center. The Mavericks defeated the Raiders 4-1, including two wins over nationally ranked players, for their first win over Texas Tech since 2001.
The Mavericks clinched the doubles point in two matches to get the momentum rolling.
Court 1 duo
Dante Teramo and
Joan Torres Espinosa earned a strong win over No. 39 ranked doubles team Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak. The 6-3 victory gives the pair their fourth win of the spring as they move to 8-4 overall.
Yazid Lahjomri and
Meethre Barot continued the doubles success with a close win on Court 2. The match came down to two games in a tough battle with Lorenzo Esquici and Olle Wallin. The freshman duo triumphed in the end, closing out the set 7-5 to solidify an early lead for the Mavericks.
Singles play came down to the wire, with multiple matches coming down to the third set.
Espinosa extended his undefeated streak as he earned his fifth win of the spring and moved to 11-2 overall on Court 1. In a dominant win over No. 85 Olle Wallin, Espinosa battled to take the match in the deciding set.
Espinosa took the first set 6-4, winning by a break of serve. Wallin battled back in the second to even the set score with another two-game win 7-5. Espinosa proved too strong in the final set, closing out the match with a 6-2 victory.
On Court 3, Barot also earned his fifth win of the spring in another three-set victory for the Mavs. Jonas Gundacker took the first set 6-3 to start off with the lead. Barot battled in the second set, taking the win by two games 7-5 to force a deciding set. The third set also came down to the wire, with Barot closing it out by a break of serve 6-4.
Freshman
Andres Medus closed out his match in two sets in a powerful performance on Court 5. He dropped only three games in the first set, defeating Pawlak 6-3 for the one set advantage. Medus had an even stronger performance in the second set, not allowing Pawlak a game to close out the match 6-0.
The Raiders earned their solo point on Court 6, where Abboud defeated Lahjomri in two close sets. The first set came down to a break of serve, where Abboud successfully closed it out 6-4. Lahjomri fought in the second set to force a tiebreaker but could not overcome Abboud, dropping the set 7-6.
WAC Player of the Week Teramo was battling on Court 2 when the match was decided. He and Esquici were at one set apiece with Teramo up 3-2.
Pedro Sasso was also in the third set, down 6-5 to Niksa Arsic on Court 4.
For their next set of matches, the Mavs will travel to San Antonio to take on Utah State (March 2) and UT San Antonio (March 3). Their next home match is set for March 10 as they look to take on Texas A&M- Corpus Christi at 2 p.m.
