ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (10-12, 6-6 WAC) lost a 94-92 heartbreaker to California Baptist (18-2, 10-1 WAC) inside the College Park Center on Thursday night.
The Lancers got the game-winning bucket on a Chloe Webb jumper inside the paint with 1.6 seconds left in the game. The Lady Mavs had a chance at the end, with
Avery Brittingham throwing the inbound pass across court to
Taliyah Clark who was able to get off a deep three-pointer but could not connect.
The Lady Mavs battled back from down six with a little over three minutes left to go in the fourth quarter, managing to tie the game several times and take the lead eventually. Free throws from Adela Valkova and
Nya Threatt tied the game and gave UTA the lead with 57 seconds left to play. CBU managed to tie it back up with 19 seconds left and got a defensive stop with six seconds left to go before calling a timeout and drawing up the game winning play.
"Our kids battled," said head coach
Shereka Wright. "These things will come back and it will be beneficial for us down the stretch as we head into March."
The Lady Mavs had their best scoring outing of the season tonight, putting up 92 points, the most since last year's regular season finale against Stephen F. Austin when the Lady Mavs put up 93 points.
For the fifth time this season, the Lady Mavs had four players put up double digits in the score column, led by
Gia Adams who had a season-high 24 points on 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from deep. Adams also pulled down two rebounds while dishing out five assists and collecting two steals. Clark put up 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists.
Brittingham posted 18 points along with eight rebounds, seven assists, one steal and two blocks. Valkova also scored 18 points on 7-of-9 from the floor while adding three rebounds, one assist and two blocks. Threatt tied her career-high with seven assists on the night to go along with five points.
The game featured 10 lead changes and nine ties with California Baptist leading most of the game, 31:37 to be exact. The Lady Mavs never got rattled, staying within striking distance and eventually taking a lead in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mavs hit the road as they travel down to Nacogdoches to take on Stephen F. Austin for the second time this season. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from inside the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
