Mavericks Go 2-0 In Road Series With Win Over New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M.-- The UT Arlington women's tennis team improved to 4-0 after defeating New Mexico State 4-1 in their second away match of the spring season at the New Mexico State Tennis Center on Thursday.

The Mavericks started off strong, going 2-1 in doubles play to gain the advantage for singles action.

Sarina Reinertsen and Ana Paula Jimenez were the first pair to finish, dropping only two games on Court 3. They defeated Dora Kurdi and Lisa Zhu 6-2, making them the only doubles team to win both matches in this week's road series.

The Aggies tied up the doubles score with a 6-3 win on Court 1, leaving the doubles point up to Court 2. Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez took their first loss of the spring season to Natsuki Nishimura and Anna Pinaieva to even the score.

Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara clinched the early lead on Court 2 with a solid win over Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Whitney Moon. The 6-3 victory gave the Mavs the 1-0 start before singles began.

Casamapere was quick to follow up her doubles success with a straight set win on Court 6. Dropping only four games, she took out Kurdi 6-2, 6-2 for her tenth win of the 2023-24 season.

Vergara was soon to follow, capitalizing on the doubles momentum with another win in straight sets. After taking the first set 6-3 over Moon on Court 5, she closed out the second set with a 6-2 victory, putting the Mavs at 3-0 in the match.

Pinaieva was too strong for Gorinsek to overcome on Court 1, retaliating with a win for the Aggies. Gorinsek fell 6-3 in the first set and fought hard in the second but fell 6-4 to put the Aggies on the scoreboard.

Manyoma-Velasquez earned her third singles win as a Maverick on Court 3 with a straight-set win over Nishimura to clinch the victory. The first set came down to two games, with Manyoma-Velasquez triumphing 6-4. She only dropped two games in the second set, securing the 6-2 win and the match for the Mavs.

Reinertsen and Jimenez did not get to finish their matches as the results had been decided.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday as they look to take on the SMU Mustangs at the UTA Tennis Center at 11 a.m. Taco Casa will be providing free tacos for those in attendance.
