SAN ANTONIO– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (5-4) looks to travel down to San Antonio for two matches, Utah State on Saturday (1 p.m.) and UT San Antonio on Sunday (11 a.m.).
The Mavericks are coming off the program's first win over Texas Tech since 2001 on February 20, where they defeated the Red Raiders 4-1 at the UTA Tennis Center. During the match, the Mavs took down one ranked doubles team as well as a ranked singles player.
Dante Teramo and
Joan Torres Espinosa are headed into the weekend matches WAC Doubles Team of the Week after they defeated Texas Tech's No. 39 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak on Court 1. The 6-3 win puts the duo at 8-4 overall, as they have also earned a strong win over Rice.
WAC Singles Player of the Week Espinosa has been impressive in singles play as the primary Court 1 player. He remains the only Mav undefeated in the spring at 5-0, and holds an 11-2 overall record. In a three-set battle against the Raiders, he took down No. 85 Olle Wallin 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Teramo holds the second most wins on the team, as he is 6-2 in the spring and 10-7 overall. In UTA's most recent tournament, the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, he had a dominant performance in both matches, defeating DePaul and New Mexico state while dropping only four games total.
SCOUTING UTAH STATE
The Aggies are currently ranked No. 60 in the nation and hold an 8-1 record in the spring as they head to Texas to face UTA and UTSA. They have defeated UC San Diego, Santa Clara and UTA's fellow WAC opponent Grand Canyon. Their one loss was to Denver. The Mavs hold a 0-1 record against the Aggies after falling 4-3 in their last meeting in 2013.
SCOUTING UTSA
The Roadrunners hold a 4-7 record in dual match play. They have defeated Utah, Wichita State and UTA's fellow WAC opponent UT Rio Grande Valley. They also suffered a 4-1 defeat to Texas Tech in February. Doubles team Alan Magadan and Tomas Pinho are ranked No. 29 in the ITA Rankings. The Mavs have a long history with the Roadrunners, with Sunday marking their 45th meeting. UTA holds a 26-18 record over the Roadrunners after their last meeting in 2023, where the Mavs lost 4-3 at the UTA Tennis Center. Their last win was in 2019 with a 4-3 win in Arlington.
