PHOENIX – Thanks to a final-round 69 from
Hiroki Miya and a top-10 finish from
Arran Kanth, the UT Arlington men's golf team concluded action Wednesday at the GCU Invitational from Grand Canyon University Golf Course in red figures at -1 for the three rounds.
Â
UTA posted a final-round 288 and concluded the 54-hole event with an 851 – the third time this season the Mavericks have finished a tournament under par, but the first time in now three spring outings.
Â
Kanth continued his great play as the grad transfer has now led the Mavs in all three spring tournaments with a T-10 showing this week at -5, despite a final-round 74 – his third-straight finish of T-12 or better.
Â
But on Wednesday it was Miya leading the way with the aforementioned 2-under 69 in helping UTA to also its third-consecutive T-7 showing.
Â
Cal State Fullerton made an incredible climb up the 16-team leaderboard, and thanks to a final-round -13 overtook host Grand Canyon for 1st place at -24, one stroke better than the Lopes (-23).

INSIDE THE SCORES
KANTH
An opening par on the 4th was followed by a bogey at 5 and a birdie at 6. The Englishman then bogeyed the 8th and 9th, rebounded with a birdie on the 10th and remained at +1 until two more bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes. That would push him to +3, which is where he stayed as a result of five-consecutive pars to close his day.
Â
MIYA
Miya opened his round on the 7th hole with a par, but quickly moved to -2 with birdies on the 8th and 10th holes. He gave one of those back with a bogey on the 11th before rattling off six-straight pars. Birdies on holes 18, 3 and 4 pushed him to -4 on the day, but he unfortunately closed with bogeys on the 5th and 6th holes to sign for the 69.
Â
CRONJE
The South African began his morning with a birdie on the par-4 5th, but returned it with a bogey on the 8th. Another bogey on the 11th slid him to +1, which is where he stayed until the 18th when he carded a birdie on the par 5. Bogeys on the 1st and 3rd saw him reside at +2 with one hole to play, but he finished strong with a tournament-capping birdie on the par-4 4th.
Â
BECK
The sophomore got off to a slow start with nothing but pars (eight) or bogeys (two) through his first 10 holes of the day. However, a birdie on the par-4 16th stopped that stretch, and he added another birdie on the 18th to get back to level par. Making the turn to the 1st, he recorded a bogey there but got it back with a closing birdie on the 5th to post even-par 71.
Â
MILLER
Beginning his round on the 8th with a bogey, Miller bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 10th. Two more bogeys on 15 and 17 pushed him to +2, but he responded with a birdie on the 18th. The roller-coaster round continued with consecutive bogeys on 2 and 3 followed by a birdie on the 4th, and pars on 5, 6 and 7 to wrap up his tournament.
Â
NEXT UP
UTA will have a few weeks off before returning to Arizona, this time to compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic from Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa Apr. 1-2.
