LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The fifth-seeded UT Arlington women's basketball team fell to the top-seeded California Baptist Lancers in the Western Athletic Conference Semifinals by a final score of 83-67 from inside the Orleans Arena on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Mavs were led by senior forward
Avery Brittingham who continued her torrid run in the tournament, leading all scorers with 18 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds while dishing out two assists and having two steals in 28 minutes of action.
Adela Valkova finished with 10 points on 4-for-6 from the floor while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. She also added one assist and one steal in 25 minutes.
Hannah Humphrey chipped in with 12 points off the bench, going 5-for-9 from the field while hitting two three-pointers. Humphrey also snagged three rebounds and having one steal in 15 minutes.
Gia Adams and
Taliyah Clark both added eight points apiece, combining for three made three-pointers. Adams also added four assists, one rebound and one block while Clark added three assists, two rebounds and one steal.
UTA controlled the opening tip and registered the first bucket of the game on a Valkova layup on the assist from Adams. The Lady Mavs managed to extend their lead to five points, their largest lead of the game, within the first two minutes of the game. It was a back and forth first quarter, as we had five ties and seven lead changes. The Lady Mavs went into the second quarter trailing the Lancers by six, 27-21.
The Lancers began to pull away in the second quarter behind a 17-3 run. The half ended with the Lady Mavs heading into the locker room trailing by 17, 52-35.
The third quarter began with UTA going on a quick 6-3 run to trim the lead down to 14 with 6:37 left in the quarter before the Lancers rattled off seven straight points to push their lead to 21. A three-pointer from Khloe Lemon to end the third pushed the Lancers lead to 24 as we headed to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Mavs defense held the Lancers scoreless for the final 4 and a half minutes of the game while going on their largest run of the game, a 6-0 run before the game ended, giving the Lancers a 16-point victory, 83-67.
