Mavs Crush SFA 16-3 To Open The Series

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team took down the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks this Friday night, 16-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavs were able to plate 13 of its 16 runs in the 5th and 6th innings of the game, which ultimately put the game into a run-rule effect.

GAME FLOW
The Mavs got off to a solid start in the bottom of the 1st inning after Ryan Ellis brought in JD Moreno off of a sacrifice groundout to take an early 1-0 lead. The Mavs built on to its lead in the 2nd inning after Cason Gregory plated Tyce Armstrong to increase the lead 2-0 with the bases loaded on a play that was ruled a throwing error to first base on SFA, however, Gregory still received the RBI.

The Lumberjacks managed a run in the top of the 3rd to regain some ground, however, the Mavs punched right back in the bottom of the 4th inning thanks to a Parker Airhart solo shot that put the Mavs ahead 3-1. SFA tied the game in the top of the 5th inning, however, UTA managed to light up the scoreboard in the next two frames to jump out to a 13-run lead.

To start off the scoring, Tyson Pointer roped an RBI single to right center to plate JD Moreno, who was walked in his at bat and advanced to second off of a wild pitch, to score the first run of the inning. Ryan Ellis then drew a walk in the next at bat to load the bases which caused SFA to bring in a new pitcher. Tate Bethel was the first Maverick batter to face off against the new pitcher and was hit by a pitch, which scored Ryan Black. Then in the next at bat the Mavs scored its third run of the inning off of another wild pitch to jump out to a 6-3 lead. In the same at bat, Airhart then drove in Bethel and Ellis off of a single to right center to increase the lead to 5 runs.

With an 8-3 lead heading into the 6th inning, the Mavs continued to pour it on SFA by scoring 8 runs in the frame, the most in an inning by the squad this season. First, Moreno and Black were once again on base by drawing a walk in their at bats, and Tyson Pointer loaded the bases on a single with no outs. Ryan Ellis stepped up the plate in his at bat and managed to get an RBI knock to center field which brought in two runners. Tate Bethel then hit a SAC fly to right field which plated Pointer which increase the lead to 11-3. Airhart drew a walk in his at bat which was followed by Armstrong getting hit by a pitch, which once again loaded the bases for the Mavericks. Cason Gregory plated the 12th run by drawing a walk and then JD Moreno reached first on a catcher's inference which brought in the 13th run. Black then drew his third walk of the day which plated the third straight run with the bases continually being loaded. Pointer then stepped up to the plate and drove in two more runs to draw the lead out to a massive 16-3 advantage.

The Mavs were able to prevent the Lumberjacks to score in the top of the 7th which ultimately put the game into a run rule.
