ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team took the three-game series against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks this Saturday, 9-2 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
GAME FLOW
The Mavs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a
Cason Gregory RBI single that brought in
Tyce Armstrong. The Mavs increased its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th with RBIs from
JD Moreno (1),
Ryan Black (2) and
Tyson Pointer (1). All 4 of the runs came with two outs on the board. First, Moreno was able to drive in Armstrong, who reached base by getting hit by a pitch, with a single through the right side. Black came up to the plate and blasted a triple, his second of the season, to right field to bring in
Garrison Berkley and Moreno to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Pointer singled up the middle to plate Black for the fourth run of the inning.
The Lumberjacks managed to plate two runs in the top of the 5th to cut into the Mavericks lead 2-5, however, the Mavs answered back with a 4-run 7th inning that put the game out of reach.
Tyce Armstrong got the 7th inning started with a SAC fly to center field to plate
Ryan Ellis, which was followed up by
Garrison Berkley RBI double which plated
Tate Bethel, who reached base on a single. In the next at bat, with a 7-2 lead, Gregory recorded his second and third RBI of the day to help the Mavs take a 9-2 advantage which the Mavs were able to hold onto until the end of the game.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert, tabbed as the starting pitcher for the sixth time this season, threw for 6.0 innings and only allowed 2 runs off of 9 hits. The Freshman from Magnolia, Texas allowed 0 walks in the 27 batters he faced as well.
Coming in for relief in the top of the 6th inning,
Joe Steeber was able to record the first save of his career. The redshirt junior pitched for 2.1 innings and only allowed 2 hits while recording 2 strikeouts in the 9 batters he faced.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
- Garrison Berkley had his first 3-hit game this season, going 3-for-4 in the game this afternoon.
- With 3 RBIs in the game, Cason Gregory now has 7 RBIs in the last three games. He managed to plate 2 Mavericks in the games against TCU on Tuesday, Mar. 19 and yesterday in the first game of the series against SFA.
- All nine of the Mavericks in the batting lineup reached base in the win, with eight batters receiving a hit while Airhart reached on a walk.
