ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team swept the three-game series against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks this Sunday, winning 11-7 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
GAME FLOW
The Lumberjacks struck first with a run in the top of the 1st inning, however
Ryan Ellis got the Mavs right back into it in the bottom frame with an RBI single through the right side.
The Lumberjacks scored two more runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 3-1 advantage, which was carried until the bottom of the 4th inning.
The Mavs exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to jump out to a 9-3 lead, with 6 of the runs scoring with two outs on the board. To start things off,
Tate Bethel reached base with a single to center field and was brought in by a double from
Parker Airhart.
Garrison Berkley was able to drive in Airhart with an RBI double down the left-field line to tie the game at 3 runs a piece.
Cason Gregory was able to get runners on the corner with a single that moved Berkley to third, however a strikeout in the next at bat put 2 outs on the board.
Ryan Black, the next batter, doubled to left field to plate both Berkley and Gregory to increase the lead to 5-3. In the next at bat,
Tyson Pointer reached base after getting hit by a pitch and was advanced to third after
Ryan Ellis hit an RBI single to plate Black to jump out to a 3-run lead.
After SFA brought in a relief pitcher,
Tate Bethel plated Pointer and Ellis on an RBI single to left field which increased the Maverick lead to an 8-3 advantage. Bethel was able to plate the 8th run of the inning after a throwing error caused Airhart to reach base to jump out to a 6-run lead at the end of the inning.
The Lumberjacks trimmed the Maverick lead to 9-5 after a 2-run 5th inning, however, once again the Mavs were able to strike right back with 2 runs of its own in the bottom of 6th after a SAC fly from Airhart and a
Tyce Armstrong RBI single to propel the Mavs to an 11-5 lead.
The Lumberjacks were able to score 2 runs in the top of the 7th to cut the Maverick lead down to 11-7, however, the Mavs were able to hold onto the 4-run lead for the rest of the game.
PITCHING PROFILE
Aaron Calhoun was tabbed as the starter in the series finale and the Oklahoma transfer was able to record one strikeout while allowing just one free pass in 4.1 innings pitched.
Caden Noah, who was credited with the win, recorded 4 strikeouts in his 2.0 innings pitched. The Senior was able to allow just one hit in the 8 batters he faced.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
- Ryan Ellis went 3-for-5 today with 2 RBIs and Garrison Berkley raked in 2 doubles and an RBI off of 4 at bats.
- The Mavericks pitching staff allowed just 2 walks today and have allowed just 6 Lumberjacks to reach first on a walk throughout the three-game series.
- Ryan Black had 3 doubles on the day, which is T-2nd for the most doubles in a game in program history.
