Mavs Take Down SFA 7-0 In First WAC Win

NACOGDOCHES, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (11-6, 1-2 WAC) earned their first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win of the season as they swept the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 7-0 at the Schlief Tennis Complex on Thursday.

The Mavericks put on a dominant doubles performance, securing victories on all three courts in order to ensure a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Ana Paula Jimenez and Sarina Reinertsen took the first win on Court 3, dropping only one game to Alkmini Giannakogiogou and Avery Kinsey. The 6-1 victory gave the pair their first WAC win and put them at 9-6 overall.

The Mavs followed up the win with another as Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara moved to 12-3 on the season and earned their third conference win on Court 2. The match came down to two games, when Casasampere and Vergara eventually triumphed and closed out the match 6-4 over Carolina Chiatti and Ksenia Mamontova.

With the doubles point already clinched, the Mavericks continued their success as Court 1 prevailed in a tight tiebreaker match. Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez moved to 2-1 in conference play as they forced a tiebreaker against Felicia Back and Jemma Cave. They managed to pull out a win with a 7-6 (4) score and move to 7-6 on the season.

The Mavericks kept the momentum rolling in singles play as they dropped only one set in pursuit of the 7-0 sweep.

In her WAC play debut, Ioana Dumitrescu earned a commanding win on Court 6 to start singles play off strong. She allowed Kinsey only one game in the first set, closing it out 6-1 to go up in the match. The next set followed in a similar manner, as Dumitrescu continued her success and took the set 6-0 for the match. She now holds a 2-0 record in dual match play, with both wins on Court 6.

Next off was Manyoma-Velasquez as she moved back into the win column with a victory over Cave on Court 3. The first set came down to one game as Manyoma-Velasquez managed to secure the 6-4 win. She then allowed Cave one less game in the second set, triumphing 6-3 to put the Mavs one win away from clinching the match.

Jimenez clinched the match on Court 4 as she earned her first win in four matches over Chiatti. Chiatti kept the first set close, forcing it to 5-5 before Jimenez prevailed in the final two games for the 7-5 victory. She then carried that momentum in the second set, pulling off a dominant 6-0 performance to secure the win for the Mavs. The victory gave her her sixteenth overall win and put her at 6-3 in the spring.

Soon to follow was Casasampere as she closed out another straight-set match on Court 5 over Giannakogiogou. The first set came down to the wire, with Giannakogiogou forcing Casasampere to close out the final two games for the 6-4 win. Casasampere then allowed Giannakogiogou only two games in the second set, securing the 6-2 victory.

Gorinsek put the Mavs one match away from completing the sweep as she earned her ninth win of the season over Mamontova on Court 1. In a dominant set one performance, Gorinsek allowed Mamontova only one game before securing the 6-1 lead heading into the second set. Mamontova made a small push in the second, but Gorinsek was not to be outdone, closing out the match 6-4.

The sweep came down to Court 2 as Reinertsen battled against Back after coming back to force a deciding-set tiebreaker. Back came out strong to take a close first set, finishing off the final two games for the 6-4 advantage.

Reinertsen retaliated, dominating the second set by allowing Back only one game to tie the score with a 6-1 win. As the match had already been decided, the pair played a ten-point tiebreaker to determine the winner. Reinertsen managed to close out the tiebreaker 10-6, securing the sweep and ending the day on a win.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Sunday to take on UT Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas at 11 a.m.
