ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (6-7) is set for their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opener against Grand Canyon on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks are looking to bounce back from their most recent loss to Wichita State, where they fell 4-1 at home on Thursday.
Freshman
Andres Medus gave the Mavs their only point against the Shockers as he earned a commanding straight-set win on Court 5. The 6-1, 6-3 victory gave him his seventh win of the season as he heads into conference play 7-4 overall.
Joan Torres Espinosa still remains undefeated in dual match play after his most recent win over ranked New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Dante Teramo also marked his seventh dual-match win over NJIT as he sits at 11-9 overall and 7-4 in the spring.
In doubles action, Teramo and Espinosa currently hold the most wins with a 9-6 overall record. Their most recent win was over No. 60 Utah State as they took down their opponents 7-5.
Freshman duo Medus and
Meethre Barot notched a strong win over Wichita State for their first victory as a doubles pair. The duo took down their opponents 6-2 despite the overall doubles loss.
SCOUTING GRAND CANYON
The Lopes currently sit at 6-11 in the spring and 1-0 in WAC play. Their first WAC win was over UT Rio Grande Valley, where they won 5-2. The Mavericks hold a 2-1 record over the Lopes after their most recent meeting in 2023, where the Mavs swept 7-0 in Phoenix. The most recent loss was in 2018, where the Mavs lost 4-1.
