ARLINGTON, Texas – Behind two complete game shutouts from
Gracie Bumpurs and
Jessica Adams, the UT Arlington softball team soared to a doubleheader sweep as the Mavericks clinched their series with Southern Utah Friday night from Allan Saxe Field.
Bumpurs went on to toss her very first complete game of the season, guiding UTA to a 2-0 victory over the Thunderbirds before Adams recorded her fifth win of the year in a 7-0 defeat.
Offensively, veteran
Lindsey Franklin paced UTA with a 3-7 performance and three RBI. Overall, the fifth year leads the Mavericks' lineup with 25 RBI and a .563 slugging percentage.
As a team, the Mavericks produced nine runs off 10 hits. Friday's clinch marks the first conference series win so far this season as the Mavs will look for a sweep heading into Saturday's final game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs Southern Utah (W, 2-0)
Camille Corona (1-1), Franklin (1-3) and
Kaitlyn Sailor (1-2, 2 RBI) were responsible for UTA's three hits as Sailor delivered a bases-loaded, two-out RBI-single to left field that brought around the only runs for the Mavs.
In the circle, Bumpurs received her ninth start of the season as she pitched her first complete game shutout. The right-handed pitcher faced 22 Thunderbirds, limiting SUU's bats to just three hits. The senior also reached a new season-high of four strike outs in a single game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs Southern Utah (W, 7-0)
With Franklin (2-4, 3 RBI) and
Zaia Castruita (2-2, 1 RBI) leading the way with multi-hit efforts, Corona (1-2, 1 RBI), Sailor (1-3, 1 RBI) and
Jade Moreno (1-2, 1 RBI) all contributed with one hit apiece.
Freshmen Sailor and Moreno have settled in quite nicely in head coach
Kara Dill's lineup as the pair struck solo home runs, aiding to the 7-0 victory. This would mark Sailor's third and Moreno's fourth long ball of the season.
UTA relied solely on the arm of Adams as the junior standout threw her fourth complete game and fourth shutout of the year. Across 26 batters faced, Adams allowed five hits with one walk.
Now, the righty sits on a 5-6 record.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will wrap up their series with the Thunderbirds with the final game on Saturday, Mar. 30 that is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Allan Saxe Field.
