ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (9-4) defeated North Texas for the fourth year in a row in a 4-1 victory at the UTA Tennis Center on Wednesday.
 
The Mavericks went down early in the match as the Mean Green managed to pull out two out of three doubles wins.
 
Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez earned the solo doubles victory for the Mavs on Court 1 to start the match off strong. The pair trailed by one game against Olivia Malm and Stanisla Shulzhenko until 3-2 when Gorinsek and Manyoma-Velasquez won four games in a row to close out the match 6-3.
 
The Mean Green evened the doubles scoreboard with a win on Court 3 over Ana Paula Jimenez and Sarina Reinertsen. Marina Adati and Lou Chalard carried a one game lead throughout the match until Jimenez and Reinertsen were able to tie it at 4-4. Adati and Chalard proceeded to close out the final two games for the 6-4 win.
 
In another close match on Court 2, Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara could not overcome Lilly Schultz and Stadfany Nformi to secure the early lead. Casasampere and Vergara had a one-game advantage throughout the match as they gained a 4-3 lead, but Schultz and Nformi made a push near the end to go up 6-5. In the last game, Schultz and Nformi proved too strong as Casasampere and Vergara dropped the match 7-5.
 
With the Mavs down 1-0 after doubles play, four strong singles wins helped complete the comeback and secure the ninth win of the season.
 
On Court 1, Gorinsek carried her doubles momentum into her singles match against Malm as she dropped only four games in her seventh overall win of the season. She took control in the first set after going up 3-2, winning the next three games for a 6-2 set. Strong serving and defense allowed Gorinsek to finish the second in a similar manner as she closed out the match with another 6-2 win.
 
Manyoma-Velasquez followed up with the next win on Court 3 as she pushed her season record to 10-1 with a victory over Nformi. The first set stayed within one game, as Nformi trailed Manyoma-Velasquez until 4-4. Manyoma-Velasquez pulled out the last two games for the 6-4 victory and put the Mavs one set away from a 2-1 match score. The momentum continued in the second, as Manyoma-Velasquez rallied from the baseline and dropped only two games for the 6-2 triumph.
 
The Mavs were one win after Casasampere secured a straight-set victory on Court 6 over Adati. Casasampere took a commanding lead in the first set as she went up 5-1 and one game away from winning the set. Adati made a small push to earn two games, but Casasampere closed out the set 6-3. In the second set, she allowed Adati only two games before earning her ninth win of the spring and finishing the set 6-2.
 
With the Mavericks only one win away from clinching the match, all eyes were on Courts 2, 4 and 5 as they played out deciding sets.
 
For her sixth win of the spring, Reinertsen came back after dropping the first set against Shulzhenko to earn the fourth singles victory and decide the match. After going down 3-1 in the first set, Reinertsen made a push to bring the set within one game. At 5-4, Schulzhenko took the final game of the set to go up 6-4 in the match.
 
Reinertsen retaliated with a set win of her own as she evened the score in the second set. She went up 5-1 and allowed Schulzhenko two more games before closing out the second 6-3.
 
The momentum continued in the final set as Reinertsen finished the match in a dominant fashion. Strong defense and passing shots allowed her to bring the set and match to a close with a 6-0 victory and clinch the win for the Mavs.
 
Jimenez and Vergara were also in deciding sets when the match was decided. On Court 4, Jimenez was up 3-2 in the third against Chalard, while Vergara was down 3-0 against Schultz on Court 5.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday to take on No. 70 UTSA at 2 p.m. Their first Western Athletic Conference match is set for March 22, where they will face Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
