ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team fell to the Baylor Bears 3-1 in a midweek showdown at Clay Gould Ballpark.
GAME FLOW
After a quiet 1st inning that saw no runs, the Bears struck first with a run in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Jackson Hill got the Mavs first hit of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning for his second hit of the year.
Baylor was able to extend its lead to 2-0 after a fielding error from the Mavs defense caused a runner to Bear to cross home plate.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 8th inning, however, the Mavs were able to plate a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to cut the Baylor lead to just two runs after
Ryan Black hit an RBI double down the right-field line to score
JD Moreno.
The Mavs gave a valiant effort in the bottom of the 9th inning to try and win the game after
Tyce Armstrong and
Kyzer Harrington reached base with just one out on the board. However, after a strike out and a throw out from the Baylor catcher, the Mavs ultimately fell to the Bears, 3-1.
PITCHING PROFILE
Tabbed as the starting pitcher for the ninth time this season,
Aaron Calhoun pitched for 2 full innings and was able to strike out 2 batters and allowed just 2 hits in the 10 batters he faced.
Garrett Gearner pitched innings 3 and 4 and was able to allow just 2 hits in his outing. The Winnsboro, Texas native was also able to ring up 1 batter on strikes throughout the 10 batters he faced.
Sam Collins made his third appearance of the season and was able to pitch for 2 innings, allowing just 2 hits in the 6 batters he faced.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will head west to the Beehive State in a conference-series matchup against the Utah Valley Wolverines, Friday through Saturday, Apr. 19-21 at the UCCU Ballpark.
