Mavs Explode For 16 Runs, Defeat Utah Valley In Series Opener

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team torched the Utah Valley Wolverines 16-4 in the first game of the series. In the win, Ryan Ellis tied the UTA single-game hitting record, going 5-for-5 on the day with 3 doubles.

GAME FLOW
The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, which was quickly erased by the Mavs in the 2nd inning after Parker Airhart and Kyzer Harrington both recorded an RBI to tie the game at 2.

The Mavs exploded for 4 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 6-2 lead, first, Tyson Pointer blasted a 474-foot 3-run homerun and following him was Parker Airhart, who roped an RBI single to left field to plate Ryan Ellis.

In the 5th inning, Pointer smoked his second homerun of the game to increase the Mavericks lead to 7-2.

In the 7th inning, and with 2 outs on the field, the Mavs sparked an offensive onslaught plating 5 runs in the frame. To start the scoring, Ryan Ellis recorded an RBI double which plated JD Moreno, who had a double of his own at the beginning of the inning. Next, Airhart roped a double to left field to plate Ellis which was then followed by Tyce Armstrong smashing a 2-run bomb to right field to plate the third and fourth runs of the inning. Garrison Berkley also got himself an RBI double and plated Kyzer Harrington, who had a single in the at bat before and was advanced to second after a throwing error, and propelled the Mavs to a 12-2 lead.

After the Wolverines scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to avoid a run-rule, the Mavs put the pedal to the metal and put the game away with 4 more runs in the top of the 8th inning. With two outs in play once more, the Mavs plated its first run of the inning after a throwing error caused Moreno to come home. Armstrong roped an RBI double down the left-field line and plated Airhart and Ellis to score the 14th and 15th runs of the game which was then followed by Berkley roping a single to right field to increase the lead to 16-4.

The Mavs were able to shutdown the Wolverines in the 8th inning to put the game into a run rule to edge out a 16-5 win.

PITCHING PROFILE
Zach Norris, who got his 10th start of the season, pitched for 5.0 innings and rang up 5 Wolverines on the night. The senior out of Paris, Texas allowed just 5 hits and 2 earned runs in the 23 batters he faced.

Jacob Hasty came in as relief in the 6th inning and faced 13 batters in the 3.0 innings he pitched. Hasty came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs in play, however, the Mizzou transfer was able to force a groundout and a double play to escape an unfathomable tough situation. He also allowed no walks in his outing.
