OREM, UTAH – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team torched the Utah Valley Wolverines 16-4 in the first game of the series. In the win,
Ryan Ellis tied the UTA single-game hitting record, going 5-for-5 on the day with 3 doubles.
GAME FLOW
It was a slow start for both teams as no runs were plated in the first two innings. The Mavericks truck first in the top of the 3rd inning after
Cason Gregory, who had a single and was advanced to third after
Ryan Black had a single of his own, scored off of a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines plated 2 runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Utah Valley increased its lead to 3-1by the end of the 4th inning, however the Mavs chipped away at the Wolverine lead in the top of the 5th inning after
JD Moreno belted an RBI single through the left side to score
Garrison Berkley to cut the lead to just one run.
The Mavs took the lead in the 6th inning with a 3-run frame after loading the bases with no outs.
Kyzer Harrington started the scoring off with a. SAC fly to center field, which was followed by Berkley bring home
Parker Airhart to take the lead 4-3.

The Wolverines took a run back in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 5-4 ballgame, however, the Mavs put the game away with a stellar top of the 9th inning. First, after Berkley and Gregory both singled and were advanced due to a balk,
Tate Bethel came in as a pinch hitter and drove in both runners with a clutch RBI double to right field.
Ryan Black doubled to right center to plate Bethel to increase the lead to 8-4. Airhart and Armstrong loaded the bases after battling for a walk and
Kyzer Harrington got himself another RBI by drawing a walk to increase the lead to 9-4.
The Wolverines got runners on second and first in the bottom of the 9th inning with no outs, however,
Joe Steeber was able to ice the game with back-to-back strikeouts and forced a fly ball for the final out to propel the Mavericks to a series win.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert, the freshman from Magnolia, Texas, was tabbed as the starter for the 10th time this season and pitched for 4.0 innings and was able to strike a batter out.
Nicholas Robb, who was credited with his 2nd win of the season, pitched for 3.0 innings and struck out 3 batters while allowing just 4 hits in the 13 batters he faced.
Joe Steeber was credited with his 3rd save of the season after pitching for the final 2 innings. The Southlake, Texas native struck out 3 batters and allowed just 1 hit in the 9 batters he faced.

- All 10 of the Mavericks who batted in the game were able to get on base.
- Cason Gregory went 2-for-2 on the day with and RBI and was able to nab 2 runs.
