Mavs Fall To DBU In Heartbreaking Fashion

DALLAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team fell to the Dallas Baptist Patriots in a 7-6 ballgame in the final midweek matchup of the season this Tuesday.
 
GAME FLOW
The Patriots got the action started with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning to take a one-run lead. The Mavericks quickly answered back after Caylon Dygert mashed his first career homerun in the top of the 2nd inning to even the game at 1-1.
 
After a scoreless top of the 3rd inning, DBU took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd after a two-run homerun to take a 3-1 advantage by the end of the frame. The Mavs were able to score a run in the top of the 4th after Tyce Armstrong scored Parker Airhart with a deep SAC FLY to center field to cut the deficit to just one run.
 
DBU plated three runs in the bottom of the 4th to jump and increased its lead to 6-2 by the end of the frame. 
 
No runs were scored by either team until the top of the 8th when the Mavs put up a two-run inning. First, Dygert reached on a walk and was advanced to third with a Garrison Berkley double to left field. Jackson Hill, who came in as a pinch hitter, plated Dygert with a SAC FLY, and Berkley was driven home after Tate Bethel recorded an infield single to draw to with two runs, 6-4.
 
In the top of the 9th, after a strikeout to start the inning, Black hit an infield single and was advanced to third after a double from Airhart. Caylon Dygert then drove home Black with a single to get on base for the 5th time in the game. Next, Berkley singled to left field and plated Airhart, the tying run, to even the game at 6-6.
 
However, in dramatic fashion, the Patriots walked the game off in the bottom of the 9th, needing just one pitch to defeat the Mavericks 7-6.
 
PITCHING PROFILE
 
The Mavericks utilized 9 different pitchers in the loss against the Patriots with Aaron Calhoun getting his 12th start of the season. The native of Pearland, Texas pitched for the opening inning and allowed a walk and a run in his start.
 
Sam Collins came in for relief in the 2nd inning and faced 4 batters on the night and picked up a strikeout and allowed no runs in his lone inning of work.
 
Garrett Gearner came in as relief in the 4th inning and pitched for 1.2 innings and was able to register a strikeout and allowed no hits and no earned runs.
 
Jacob Hasty pitched for 1.0 innings and picked up a strikeout and allowed just two hits in his inning of work.
 
Joe Steeber, who had the most innings pitched with 2.0 innings of work, was perfect in his relief appearance allowing no hits and no runs against the 6 batters he faced.
 
 
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
  • Caylon Dygert, a Freshman from Magnolia, Texas, had his first career homerun of his young career in the loss. Dygert also reached base safely in all 5 of his plate appearances, picking up a homerun, two singles and two walks on the evening.
  • Garrison Berkley had himself a multi-hit game with a 4-for-5 outing with a double and an RBI in the loss.
 
ON DECK
The Mavs will fly out to Seattle for conference clash against Seattle U from May 10-12 at the Bannerwood Park just outside of the campus of Seattle U.
