LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA - The UT Arlington volleyball team defeated the Murray State Racers in a 3-0 sweep (26-24) (25-22) (25-19) in the season-opening match at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic this Friday.
The Mavericks attack proved too much for the Racers as the squad notched 42 kills.
Brianna Ford accounted for 18 kills, while
Evyn Snook provided 8 kills of her own. Snook, a sophomore from Magnolia, Texas, led the team in aces with 4 in the match.
Both
Paige Reagor and Cansu Günaydin picked up 7 kills while
Mollie Blank provided 34 assists and nine digs, just one shy of a double-double, in the win.
In the win, Ford eclipsed 1,300 career kills and also cracked into the top 10 all-time in program history. She sits just 28 kills shy of passing up Chris Rudiger (1,330) for ninth all time.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"Felt good to get the first match of the season under our belt," said head coach
J.T. Wenger. "We had some first-match jitters in the first set but our squad pulled it together and produced a great 3-0 win. The passing and serving really came along during that third set and I'm excited to see how we build off this strong start."
NEXT UP
The Mavericks are right back at it tomorrow against Jackson State in day two of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start time in the EK Long Gymnasium on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette.
