LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA - The UT Arlington volleyball team defeated the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a 3-0 sweep (25-23) (25-17) (25-18) in the final match of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic this Sunday. The win marked the squad's third-consecutive sweep to start the season. The last time the Mavericks opened the season with three-consecutive sweeps was in 1988, when the Mavs went on to sweep Prairie View A&M, Florida State and Penn State. Additionally, the Mavs swept Florida and Baylor to start the season with five sweeps.
The Mavs defense paced most of the match as the squad notched 13 total blocks. Ford also recorded a season-high 8 total blocks in the win. On the offensive side, the squad notched 34 kills.
Brianna Ford led the team with 11 kills while Cansu Günaydin recorded 8 for the second game in a row.
Samantha Glenn picked up a season-high 13 digs in the win, which marks her third game in a row with 10 or more digs.
Mollie Blank poured in 28 out of the 31 assists and also picked up 6 digs of her own.
Four different Mavs,
Brianna Ford (15), Cansu Günaydin (11),
Paige Reagor (11) and
Alexis Bull (10.5) scored double-digit points in the win.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"We started out a little slow to begin the match, however, our blocking and defense really shined to guide us along" said head coach
J.T. Wenger. "Our serve receive was very stable which allowed for a varied offense as the match progressed. Very nice team win for our group."
NEXT UP
The Mavericks get some time off before returning to the College Park Center for the UTA Classic from Sep. 5-7. The Mavs will face off against Santa Clara on Thursday at 6 p.m. before playing McNeese on Friday and UL-Monroe on Saturday.
