ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington cross country teams hosted the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational this morning at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake. The men finished second while the women finished third as a team.
The women had two top three finishers while the men had three finish in the top 10.
In her season debut,
Matro Jepkemboi paced the women with a time of 17:33.90 for a second place finish. Not far behind her teammate
Winnie Kipsang, who posted a new personal best of 17:45.30 in the 5k, shaving nearly 10 whole seconds off her previous best. In her first race of the year,
Lauren Walls-Portillo was the only other Maverick to finish in the top 20 for the women, coming in at 18th with a time of 18:53.60.
Rounding out the top five finishers for the women,
Claire Compher finished 26th with a time of 19:07.30 while freshman
Emilia Mandl came in 29th with a time of 19:25.30.
On the men's side,
Jackson Cichon helped guide the Mavs to a second overall team finish after he placed fourth with a time 15:09.40. Cichon bested his personal record in the 5k that he set last week at the John McKenzie Invitational.
Josue Granados came in fifth for the Mavs after finishing with a new personal record of 15:09.70 in the 5k.
Patrick Estes joined Cichon and Granados in the top 10 after placing seventh with a new personal record of 15:10.70 in the 5k.
Andrés Gurrola finished in the top 15, coming in at 14th overall with a new personal best of 15:20.60 in the 5k. Rounding out the top five finishers for the men was
Rogelio Aguirre who finished 19th with a time of 15:25.70 in his first collegiate 5k race.
No Mav finished outside the top 25 in a field of over 80 runners for the men. UTA finished second overall on the men's side of the course.

The Mavs return to action next Friday, September 13, as they travel to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational.
