Cross Country Gears Up For NCAA South Central Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.– The UT Arlington cross country teams gear up for the NCAA South Central Regionals that is set for Friday, Nov. 14 from Agri Park.

One season ago, Matro Jepkemboi missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by just four runners after spearheading the Mavericks with an 18th place finish with a time of 20:06.2 in the women's 6k.

This year, Jepkemboi has had a solid junior campaign thus far with four top 10 finishes including a second-place performance at the Texas A&M Invitational back in September. There, she captured a time of 17:00.6 in the women's 5k.

After a fourth-place finish at the conference championships, Jepkemboi was named All-WAC First Team following a time of 20:20.9 in the women's 6k.

Fellow teammate Dorcas Jepkosgei was recently named the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Women's Freshman of the Year after a phenomenal first year.

The Kenyan native had a tremendous regular season campaign, finishing second at UTA's Gerald Richey Invitational (Sept. 5), first at the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 13), second at Arkansas' Chile Pepper Festival (Oct. 4), and 16th at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational (Oct. 17). Jepkosgei rounded out WAC Championships with an impressive second place finish back on October 31 in Arlington with a time of 20:03.90 in the women's 6k.

That performance earned her All-WAC First Team honors making it her first in her collegiate career.

Jepkosgei hit a new personal record in her young career back at the Chile Pepper Festival, turning in a time of 16:09.5 in the women's 5k. At the Texas A&M Invitational, the freshman also set a new course record in the Aggies' event after capturing a winning time of 16:46.0.

Sophomore Toby Eaton has led the men's squad throughout the course of the season with his best finish of fourth coming from UTA's Gerald Richey after running a 15:07.1 in the men's 5k. Since then, Eaton has put two top 15 finishes under his belt with his most recent one from the WAC Championships. His time of 24:29.3 in the men's 8k earned him a spot on the All-WAC Second Team list.

Freshman Mateo Doherty looks to have a promising regional performance as the newcomer is coming off a top 30 finish at the conference championships. The Argentina native's best outing has come from the Mavericks' home opener with a fifth-place finish after posting a 15:10.7 in the men's 5k.

Last year at regionals, the UTA men finished 18th as a team while the women finished 21st.
