ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (8-6, 3-0 WAC) overcame a slow start in the first quarter to power their way to a 78-54 win over Southern Utah (2-14, 0-3 WAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the College Park Center.
With the win, the Lady Mavs are now riding a four-game winning streak and remain a perfect 7-0 at home. The 3-0 start in conference play is the first time the Lady Mavs have started off conference 3-0 since the 2019-2020 season when they were a part of the Sun Belt Conference. In their fourth season in the Western Athletic Conference, this is the first time UTA has begun WAC play at 3-0.
Koi Love led all scorers with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the floor to go along with one three pointer and one free throw. Love added three rebounds, two assists, three steals and one block in 28 minutes. In conference play, Love is averaging nearly 24 points a game.
Avery Brittingham finished with 16 points, six rebounds, nine assists, two steals and a block in 29 minutes of action. Brittingham made her way to the free throw line 10 times, nailing eight from the charity stripe.
Nya Threatt was the third and final Lady Mav to finish with double digit point totals, tying her season high with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor. Threatt matched her season high with five rebounds while dishing out four assists, the most she's had in a conference game in the early going.
The Lady Mavs struggled out the gate despite controlling the opening tip, turning the ball over twice and missing their first four shots before recording a bucket with 6:44 left in the first quarter. Southern Utah would go up by six, 8-2, before a 10-0 run by the Lady Mavs would put them up by four, 12-8. The Thunderbirds would manage to tie the game with 40 seconds left in the first and took a two-point lead with six seconds left to bring us to the second quarter with UTA trailing 14-12.
With 6:56 left in the second quarter, the Lady Mavs would regain the lead, 22-21 and would never squander it for the remainder of the game. Going into halftime, UTA would find themselves up 10, 42-32, after exploding for 30 points in the second.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Mavs would continue their scoring barrage that began in the second quarter, recording 25 points in the third quarter and pushing their lead up to 20 plus points and never looked back.
As a team, the Lady Mavs shot 42 percent from the floor while holding the Thunderbirds to 39 percent for the game. Defensively, UTA forced Southern Utah into 24 turnovers which led to 20 points for the Lady Mavs. UTA turned the ball over 13 times for the game.
The Lady Mavs dominated in the paint, recording 42 points down low while holding Southern Utah to 26 points in the paint. UTA finished with 20 assists, the fourth game this season they finished with 20 or more assists. For the fourth game in a row and eighth game overall, the Lady Mavs finished with five or more blocks, finishing with six for the afternoon.
